So finally, Dhanonjay Chatterjee, sentenced to death for raping and murdering a 14-year-old girl in Kolkata in 1990 has been hanged on Saturday at 0430 IST, as per official reports.
Wasnt all the recent interest in this case due to media hype ?
Being a topic of public concern, mayI request Canadian Desis to share their views on this platform.

Jashan,
In my personal opinion, there should not be any mercy with such people.
I think that the Media has made a hype of this issue... ( Transforming a Rapist and Killer to a father Figure)
well, every channel was talking about the stay and amnesty which the convict was seeking from the Honourable Supreme Court and The President...but in my view, nobody ( None of the channels) had even thought of the tragedy happened with the Young Girl and their family...
Maverick
All of a sudden all everybody is doing is sympathising with Dhanonjay and his family.. yes the media is hyping it up..by showing his parents refraining from eating etc..... no one remembers how cruel and heartless it was of him to rape and murder a 14 yr old.
If such people are let off then we will keep on hearing more such cases. such punishments act as a deterrant for other people who might commit such crimes.
Dhanonjay's last statement..."i forgive u all, may god bless u"?????

Mercury6 Bhai,
What abt. the Girl who Died???That Fellow Killed a Young Girl..
Sure he killed her and raped her as she was dying.....or maybe he didnt.
I am not sure. Can you provide me with an article about the proof against him?
In my opinion life sentence without Parole is the best option.
Killing somebody basically becomes a collective act of revenge. A Very primitive instinct.
A cold-blooded execution of a defenseless person (in response to a similar act) diminishes us all.
It may also not bring closure to the Victims' families. Closure comes from forgiveness.
Another point is that death penalty as a deterrent is somewhat dubious.
Yet another point is the fact that many innocent people are executed...it's almost frightening how many people on death row have been exhonorated by "The Innocence Project" in USA. this is themost advanced country in the world. (thats what I have heard).
Here is a site about the Innocence project.

You know Canada doesnt have the Death Penalty. I think thats a very progressive thing.

The Dhanonjoy Show
(Hindustan Times)
September 3
Even the most ardent supporter of artistic freedom will find it uncomfortable to hear that the Dhanonjoy Chatterjee drama is about to take on an after-life in the form of, well, drama. Just when one thought that the sordid saga of the rapist-murderer and his last days had run its full course, there’s news that Bengal’s struggling jatra (popular folk theatre) is planning to resurrect not only the late Chatterjee but also the theatre of the absurd scripted by the media that have already created a captive audience for the upcoming shows in Calcutta.
There is a section of society — mainly from the middle-class — which is already decrying the fact that as many as four different jatra companies will run variations of what’s being advertised as Dhanonjoy At the Gallows. The same section were the ones who pored over every detail in newspapers and were stuck to every ‘breaking news’ on television that revolved around the Dhanonjoy case.
One of the productions is not sparing any expenses; it plans to have props which include plywood replicas of an elevator, a jeep, a bus and even an aeroplane. These seem to be as unrelated to the real tragic event as say, the media’s blow-by-blow coverage of what Dhanonjoy was eating before he died, what Dhanonjoy was listening to before he died, what Dhanonjoy was thinking before he died.... So, in a sense, the jatras will be covering territory that the media has already covered in great detail, if not taste.
