ever wondered about the connection b/w the Lanka in Ramayana and Sri Lanka ?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Lanka mentioned in the Ramayana is not Sri Lanka. To start with, Sri Lanka was not known as Lanka in ancient times. It was known as Simhala. IN all the Indian chronicles, such as the Puranas, the writings of Varamihira and the Greek and Buddhist writings all stated that the Simhala island differed from the island of Lanka.’ Mahabaratha refers to two distinct islands called Lanka and Simhala.
The Ramayana was never a part of the mythology of Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka appears to have rejected the Ramayana
However, at the end of the 20th century, Sri Lanka decided to embrace the Ramayana
It stated that the bridge was not a man made one. Geological Survey of India did a three year study of the area between Rameshwaram in India and Mannar in Sri Lanka. The survey said that the bridge was not a man made (or monkey made) construction. The sequence of clay, limestone and sandstone which emerged could not have been man made.
NASA satellite pictures also indicated that the bridge was formed through the sedimentation of clay and lime stone.
NASA said the bridge was about 1.75 million years old
Ram Setu of the Ramayana was more likely located in a small stretch of water in Central India and not in the Palk Strait. Its noted that the Setu was not mentioned in some versions of the Ramayana.
This discussion can go on but the bottom line is its a myth created centuries ago and has no relevance to todays world which is driven by blind faith and stupidity.
I see the Hindu bashing has started on this thread. Hindu do not denigrate other religions but I guess that is perceived as its weakness (which in fact it might be) . There is enough material on Ramayana and Hindu Dharma on internet and any body who is truly curious to know all the aspects rather than having closed mind (Secular mind!). I do not intend to paste the links or copy – paste what is available.
One more thing for those who hate Hindu or are Pseudo secular.- Ask any student of philosophy or moral science. Both Geeta and Ramayana are rich and truly thought provoking compared to garbage that is in other religious texts, provided one cares to read it completely. I would rather believe in Ramayan than believing in dead rising again.

Something I would never be able to explain to my kids about the incarnation of god in the epics,
Ramayan - Rama did not trust his wife (or just doing his dharma to please a critisicing dhobi)
Mahabharata - Krishna having 16,000 "girlfriends".
So much for Women Rights.
Shriya.
