In my opinion, regardless of how wonderful you share a rapport with your Boss, it is not advisable to gift him/her. It might be construed as something negative. Good intentions nevertheless. You may never know how your boss will take it.

I personally share a great rapport with my Boss, but refrain from giving anything that could put me in an awkward position.

So, the middle path that I would recommend is to present him/her with a holiday greeting card, which I think would be a fair gesture on your part.

I would not give alcohol at work. I have always given my boss a Christmas card and sometimes something small like a mug or stationary (I am female and these were gifts to female bosses).

Best is to give a coupon for a complete massage/rubdown in the nearby spa.

Try this and look at your performance appraisal / pay raise the next time around.

I generally used to get a wine bottle as a gift from my boss which I would in turn present to a desi who drinks wine.

I will never give wine. It is waste of money and crappy gift now a days. If not sure, you can buy a gift card (shop.ca - Cadillac Fairview Malls around Toronto) or something similar.

You can also buy gift card from COSTCO. They sell spa or some restaurants gift cards for 60%-80% of value.
