Thanks for all the responses, Pokiri, DSD, and RESP. I have come to the conclusion driving may not be so bad, but as it was said with road and weather conditions in mind.

Presently I am thinking of Toronto, to Sault Ste. Marie, to Thunder Bay, to Winnipeg, Saskatoon, to Fort McMurray. With overnight stops in each place. I think this will take at least 4 -5 days depending on conditions, (I will have to keep at least one day in hand just in case something slows me down).

I could also go through the US but I think it will nice to see more of Canada and not have to bother with boarder crossings and customs officials.

Does this seem like a good plan? - I am looking for advice.

thanks to all in advance.

Its good plan . Go with it . You will remember this adventure & it will be your life time memory. Roads are good in canada so nothing to worry , Just fill up your fuel tank full when ever you find gas station . Keep some extra water and hand wiper to clean windshield if it gets dirty by mud and snow . Keep soem fast / western music CDs in your car to keep you awake . Never ever go for cruize control .

From Sakatoon to Fort Mac can be a pain especially if you are travelling with the family. A stop in between like Athabasca or Lac La Bische will certainly ease the strain.
It is certainly a good idea to have winter wires if you are not driving an SUV or AWD with all season tires.
Enjoy the ride

I often do drive north and I would say it is not a good plan if you are driving to FM before April, it is not worth. If you want to see beauty of Canada than drive during summer months not winter:)
Certainly choice is yours !

Thanks again for the suggestions.

I went to CAA and spoke to them and they kindly said I should think about going through the US since the roads are a better and also have more traffic would meaning better maintained roads with better service and more available stops, cheaper petrol, and shorter route, and better weather on the west side on the great lakes.

I am thinking of Toronto to Chicago, to St Cloud, to Winnipeg, to Saskatoon, to Fort Mac, with an overnight stop in each place.
(I would like to go from St Cloud MN to Regina SK and then on to Fort Mac AB but there does not seem to be a good place to stop for the night).

So even though I would like stay on the Canadian side, I somehow think this time I should travel through the US.

Any suggestions?
thanks Again to All.
