BJP had let the people down earlier on two important occasions.

First when it came to power in 1999. It need not have detonated the atom bomb. But should have shown more resolve during Kandhahar hijack. BJP government were sloppy in security preparedness. We let the aircraft fly away from India even though it was in India/Nepal airspace for several hours. Instead of capitulating to the hijackers demands, we should have carried a commando raid. But Jaswant Singh carried suitcases of currencies for the terrorists which only fueled more terrorist acts against India.
Their performance in other areas too carried same duplicity.

Secondly, in 2008 when the people of Karnataka gave them a mandate, BJP squabbled as to who should be the CM and lost the next elections. For the conservative, religious and God fearing Karnataka, BJP doing a good term would have made the state gateway to South India.

For a party which wears patriotism on its sleeves, BJP has failed twice. In 2014 also instead of acting strongly and passing ordinance against the corrupt money bags and scam bags and nationalizing the stolen wealth, BJP has only "appointed enquiry commission", enabling the thieves to get away. Whatever lakhs of crores stolen/being stolen from the country, non payment of taxes or repayment of loans by the rich and corporate, all of them is made up by quietly slipping the cost component into the fuel bill. This forever raises the inflation, prices and impoverishes the masses. BJP too is following only the Congress.
