Dimple2001 - please check your PM.
There is a huge circle of negativity in this forum. I remember it used to be a very good place with the sole purpose to help out new immigrants or local desi's with any queries they had. Nowadays - it is all about attacking members.
If I have to constantly prove a point or defend my statements - be it a simple statement about LinkedIn - then it is so tiresome and boring.
This shall be my last post on this forum - I quit wanting to be part of this "desi" culture/group. We are eventually - the choices we make.
My dear very intelligent desi's - when I stated that it is not easy to make a fake id on LinkedIn - it was not LITERAL - it meant that since MOST professional people (may NOT include you) - at least in the field I come from - IT - a LinkedIn profile is one of the "checking points" prior a formal background check. This does not mean only looking at what is written on the profile by the person - but as a whole - the connections - the endorsements- the recommendations- the job titles - whether they are connected to the home pages of their own employers - whether they are a part of related groups etc. That is difficult to fake or fib. It is a very important tool in today's world. Most headhunter's and recruiters revert to LinkedIn to find senior people. This profile is usually the"first" meeting with potential employees.
Please do not make this into another circus post with "tu tu" "main main" - which is all people in this forum are inclined to do - even the so-called "senior" members.
I visit this forum - since I remember resorting to it for my million queries prior migrating here. I wanted to help people - the way they helped me.
There is so much pettiness and need to "one up" constantly - that there are no exchange of ideas or relevant conversations.
I guess most people here are happy with wallowing in their misery - of what they found or did not - in Canada. Please continue - this well is perfect for such frogs who keep pulling the other down. I give up. I need some fresh air.
Goodbye and good luck!!!!
Lol , Dimple yaar kabhi kisi ki tarif bhee karr diya karo :-)) ... madam narraj ho gayee.
Geeta, I am surprised that a positive person like you got upset over linkedin discussion ! This is rather a productive topic to discuss and share experiences.
I am a big fan of linkedin. Rather I must say it made my career (my profile is truthful and rather some sections of it are mellowed down for a right pitch!) . So I owe to linkedin in many ways. Recommendations and endorsements matters most which are difficult to fake !
Thanks for raising this topic, Dimple.
Linked In is less likely to be faked especially when you have endorsements.

Fido.
Yes, I read the LI blogs and articles. Quite informative and teach me a thing or two, for sure.
Those that say LinkedIn profiles can't be faked, here's my first hand take. Two of my friends are looking for Project Management jobs. This is what they did on LI (despite of endorsements, and such):
1. Friend A (works in the same office): Working in IT Support, studying to pass PMP. He changed his current position from Support Analyst to 'Senior IT Project Consultant'. He skewed his experience in such a way as if he's managing IT projects. He's not. He has nothing to do with Projects at all. This guy is so fearless that he added his leads, colleagues to his LI profile that puts him into a laughing stock.
2. Friend B: Used to work in US as a Mechanical Engg. When the company started laying off, he moved to GTA, completed his PMP and found his first break as a PM (6 months' contract) with RBC. He completely removed his past experience as a Mechanical Engg, and now stated 5 years of Financial PM experience. He only worked in Financial sector for 6 months. Of-course, his friends and colleagues, connections know the truth. Like me, they must also be laughing at his fakedness. Or, may be not, depanding who you talk to.
3. Friend C: Worked only 3 months or so in a company, and now mentions 1.5 years. She is a flourishing Manager now (125k/year). She also has connections from that 3 months old company.
So, yes people lie on LinkedIn, exaggerate to the leaps and bounds.

Murali LOL at HappyWoman26's experience.
HW36,
You have a knack of getting into troubles everywhere. School, Sidewalks and now Linkedin. I have never heard of anyone having a bazzair experience such as you.
Anyways, on to the topic,
Any profile can be faked. I myself have a fake Linkedin profile where I have changed the name of my current company. Though I have done like this, I get endorsement on Linkedin for residential construction, project management etc.. from professionals and relatives who are professionals.
But Linkedin can be used as a very powerful networking tool. No question about that. Esp. when you need jobs in the Gulf or NA or Europe. Many HR consultants of famous companies are in Linkedin, seeking job applicant.
As a sidenote : I had a CEO who was fired. After that he got job in Singapore, he canged his job resosibilities of what he did in our company into one that might have more suited him for his current / future positions. Everything is in our hands.
Murali
