Yes, I read the LI blogs and articles. Quite informative and teach me a thing or two, for sure.

Those that say LinkedIn profiles can't be faked, here's my first hand take. Two of my friends are looking for Project Management jobs. This is what they did on LI (despite of endorsements, and such):

1. Friend A (works in the same office): Working in IT Support, studying to pass PMP. He changed his current position from Support Analyst to 'Senior IT Project Consultant'. He skewed his experience in such a way as if he's managing IT projects. He's not. He has nothing to do with Projects at all. This guy is so fearless that he added his leads, colleagues to his LI profile that puts him into a laughing stock.

2. Friend B: Used to work in US as a Mechanical Engg. When the company started laying off, he moved to GTA, completed his PMP and found his first break as a PM (6 months' contract) with RBC. He completely removed his past experience as a Mechanical Engg, and now stated 5 years of Financial PM experience. He only worked in Financial sector for 6 months. Of-course, his friends and colleagues, connections know the truth. Like me, they must also be laughing at his fakedness. Or, may be not, depanding who you talk to.

3. Friend C: Worked only 3 months or so in a company, and now mentions 1.5 years. She is a flourishing Manager now (125k/year). She also has connections from that 3 months old company.

So, yes people lie on LinkedIn, exaggerate to the leaps and bounds.

This is how "Gods" are created - blind belief.

I am sure you believed all this about your friends - I am sure None of them were asked for reference checks - where the HR department is called to verify the employment period besides presenting a letter. And off course - none of their seniors/reporting managers/supervisors were called for a reference prior employment. Nobody cares about misrepresentation in this country.

And lastly - they all performed well at jobs requiring 5 yrs of experience - when They had only 3 - 6 months. ME to PM Finance - no experience needed. Wow! Experience, knowledge and expertise are so overrated by fools like us.

In Hindi - "Lapet"

Well, I didn't fully understand what you really meant in your above post. It may be attributed to my bad English comprehension skills.

Except, if you re-read my post you will notice that I don't appreciate all this about my friends. I laugh at them for faking their profiles, and how they could get in trouble for doing so. Might even lose faith with the present and past supervisors. I strongly believe in professional integrity, and always behaved as such. I do not know at all, how are they looking for jobs, and how their references are checked. Never asked, never told.

On the references part, do you know that even these can be faked? It is especially prevalent in IT, in US and India. But, that's not the point of my post. I merely posted what I experienced.

You sound and assume as if I am a complicit in their fakedness, just because they are my friends/colleagues, and what not. Quite the contrary, in fact.

Yes, in Hindi I too 'lapet' a lot when I read their profiles.

For me they are not 'Gods' at all. That's too big a title. I criticized them, and not appreciated their dishonesty and lies.

How they perform in their respective job is none of my business at all.

This all doesn't take away the fact that LinkedIn is a great and very strong tool. Helped me a lot in my career, and still doing so. Just because of this I found myself in a great standing when it came to salary negotiations with multiple offers. Salute!

Feb,
The advantage of you being in Vancouver is that when you post, before heading off to sleep, I can read it during office time.
