Last week, we purchased a box of Alphonso mangoes(6 mangoes per box). Cost? 16$ !!
This was at Patel brothers in Scarborough.
That is around 3$ a mango. Ridiculous!
1) Are people in the west end getting a better deal?
2) what other varieties are available?
If there is any good deals going on, i will make a trip to Mississauga or Brampton. Please update.
thanks

$23 for box of 12 at the Indian Grocery at Peanut Plaza. Usually it starts around $25 and by the end of the season drops to almost $18 / $20

Even the price in India thesedays is ridiculous..say a dozen for Rs. 1,000 ..so around $ 20 for 12 in India..so NOT surprised after shipping and export cost and spoilage cost..they are so expensive in GTA.

Ataulfo or Haden .
We purchase a box of 14 big for Atulfo or 10 big for Haden from Chinese stores for $10/- - $13/-... We prefer Ataulfo since it is not fibrous and easier to eat ..
We buy it un ripened , wash and keep in the fridge and keep them out for 4/5 days for getting ripened ... 3 mangoes every day are replaced from the fridge and another box comes up on the weekend... they are cheaper than apples !

We just buy what ever the name be, that is available in the nearby market. Only when I hear the names I try and remember them and do a search.
Haden, "Hayden" are not fibrous either. But I will not stop there, because I found out that they have crossed them here locally with the other local cultivars and until they are ripe and ready to eat, I will never ever know. By then it is too late. The sale is over or there is none left on the skids.
Most of these we go by its shape and looks and also the smell it generates, if ripe. We have a small pail of chalu rice and if I bury them a few at a time, it gets ripe in a day or two. If I leave it in the open, within a week. In the Fridge takes a little longer but stays fresh and cool.
When a sale comes on at the start of the season, I saw it for 7 bucks or under for 10 Mangoes. I jumped at it and the flesh on them is sumptuous. So, I enjoy them as they ripen.
That gets me out of the winter doldrums.
Enjoy the summer.
