Hi,
I have recently arrived in Canada for my PR as a landed immigrant. I am expecting a baby in November.I wanted to know if I give my baby birth in Canada, will he receive citizenship immediately. Are there any other benefits too? Are there any delivery and hospital charges?
Any help would be appreciated.
Regards,
Shivani
Hi Shivani,
First of all, many congrats!!
Your child will be a canadian citizen automatically and you can get his/her canadian passport within 2-3 months of birth. You need to complete the required formalities for registering the birth etc..with the municipality.
I am note sure what kinds of benefits are you looking for, but there are the usual Canada Child Tax benefit, tax breaks for children, etc..which your accountant or nearest service canada office will explain in detail.
There are absolutely no expenses related to your hospital visit or child birth, if you are covered by OHIP. However, some expenses you may encounter are parking, telephone in your room, child car seats etc..
All the best.
Hiren
PS : Did you assume the baby will be a boy or you already know???

The city takes about 3 months to register the birth of the baby. Only after that you can apply for birth certificate, which you can get quicker if you apply online. After you get the birth certificate, you can get child's passport and SIN. SIN is required for opening RESP account (education savings).
You will get Universal child care of $100 per month apart from Canada Child Tax Benefit.
You may get child care subsidy* for a few months if you want to return to work after couple of months.
*depending on your bank balance, family income and region's funding.

Also, I would like to add for medical, you should have good knowledge. Not like india, in india doctor do everything. Here, they will ask your permission so you hve to know lots of medical terms. You can enroll in Prenatal classes where they will teach you everything. I think in brampton this classes are free. Also, try to get your family doc as soon as possible. they will make referal to gynec..you cant go directly to gynec doc.but you can go hospital emergency in case something go wrong..also if you dont have family doc just go to hopital in emergency if anything happen. but you need doc as soon as possible. Doc will schedule 3 month ultrasound..baby's mind test..etc.. all are very imp...not likely in india..ultrasound have done to find out baby's sex ..but to find out..any complication with babys growth..they do very detail for 1 hour.. to find out baby's nerve system fully develop..babys brain.. baby's heart..and you hve to prepare with all proper question she be asked.
send me PM, i will help what time which question to be asked and what to make sure. I am due anytime.. just waiting to go hospital and come back with baby. so I have recent 9 month expreince..and i hve learnt a lot.
Thanks a lot to everyone who replied to the messages. It was quite an eye opener.
Thanksa lot.
Shivani
Congratulations on your new addition to the family. Although you've been given most of the info, I just wanted to correct one important piece of information. SIN number cannot be made until your baby is 14 years of age as that will help them in getting a job....etc....
I have a 9 month old daughter and I had her through c-section. I did everything needed to to have a healthy baby but I still feel that I didn't collect enough information...I wish I had known more about c-section...the aftermath of it. So just to give you heads up.....make sure you ask away any sort of question, even minor from your doctor. I have a few relatives who had their baby in Brampton hospital and it was not a great experience. If you could choose another hospital. I myself would recommend Milton hospital as that is where I had my baby.........this information is not relavent to your questions but I know how tough it could be being a new mother. I wish you the best for you and your beautiful baby...take care
