Friends, can some of you motivate me why Calgary was a better place for living and working than Toronto & GTA??
BTW - I noticed for the same price of house in Toronto , Calgary was offering better quality homes... which attracted my attention !
Can Calgary be a an acceptable option for guys in IT/Software fields ???
I shall appreciate your responses.
Hey Sajmad,
We ourselves are in the process of moving to Canada. We had planned Toronto as our destination, but lately Calgary has come up as a more tempting option.
A couple of friends who have lived there, told us the cost of living is lower in Calgary, the taxation system more favourable and the economy quite robust.
Although we are not sure about the career opportunities for different kinds of professionals, we are seriously looking into the Calgary option.
Hope we get more information on Calgary from our friends on this forum.

cost of living is cheaper, and NO PST!!! thats 8% off everything if you were buying it in ontario...
alberta is the only province in canada that has no debt, which says a lot... currently you have to pay health care premiums, but there are rumblings that ralph klien may actually abolish the premiums going into the next election... and he can afford to... the projected surplus for alberta this year is what... $10 billion or something?
the mountains are 2 hours away, which is the biggest plus... hop into a car after work on friday and you could be in the most beautiful place on earth in 2 hours... i swear... if heaven exists, its in the rockies... hiking in the summer, skiing in the winter... what else can a man ask for?
odd jobs are plentiful, chances are you will not starve because the local mcdonalds will always be hiring... infact, in canmore, which is about an hour from calgary, pretty much everyone has help wanted signs... there was a story on cbc couple of days ago about the severe shortage of help in canmore...
as far as it/software goes, depends on what you are into... check http://www.workopolis.com and find out the state of your chances yourself...
there is a decent sized desi community in calgary, but pretty much all concentrated in the north east part of the city (which is also the most crime prone - go figure)... there are a bunch of indian stores spread out, but again most in the NE... obviously not like toronto (which sucks in my opinion)...
standard of living in calgary is excellent.. the people are friendly... and the city is exploding at the seams because more and more people are giving up the comfort zone of toronto and vancouver, and looking elsewhere, and (surprise surprise) calgary is where they end up...
edmonton is not bad either, has most of the same advantages, but being calgarian, i am required to hate edmonton
hello,
Seems Calgary is on the minds of many new immigrants. We have a lot of friends in Calgary and they do recommend the place.
But would you know what are the prospects for accountants and media people?
