Hi Neha,
Thanks for ur quick reply. I am standing at the border for the skilled worker stuff because don't have much full time work experience. My Ph.D work was counted as a part time employment and its only three months since I am a full timer. Still being single so I am missing the points of Spouse..:rolleyes
Before coming to Germany, I worked full time as a Junior Research fellow at Pune for a year but dunno if it counts because in the experience letter its written that I was paid stipendium during this period.
As u pointed out that its gonna take time. Do u think I can apply quickly and by the time my application is processed, I earn the neccessary full time work experience and get my application approved..
Thanks again for your reply

As you mentioned, you have worked for a year and were paid for it (stipend or otherwise, income is income). If you look up the categories under which you can show work experience...you will find there is one for "Research Assistants" therefore time spent working as a research assistant will be counted.
Also the three months you have already worked full time + any Part time work ( 1yr part time = 6 months full time) will probably be > 40 hrs/week * 50 weeks = 1 yr exp.
Hope this helps.

Hi Nerd and Neha,

Hi All,
Although I have been a member of this site for a rather long time, I haven't been very active. Seeing all the queries and need for information going around, I thought of posting this reply.
I am an Immigration Consultant, A Member in Good Standing of The Canadian Society of Immigration Consultants (CSIC).
My offer to all (specially students in Canada) is that if U have any specific query realting to Urself and would like to have it answered, write to me at
The reason I say write it to me directly at my E Mail add. is that since I'm normally tied down with my own Professional work, I may not have the time to revert back to this site / message board often.
I am ready and willing to help anyone with any specific query, FREE OF CHARGE. I know what all people go thru to get some right advise / guidance, specially students, and that is why I am ready to help anyone FREE.
(For those of you who wonder about my credentials, you can find me on the CSIC website under MEMBERSHIP LIST).
Wishing U'll All the Best for the Future.
Hi,
Well I seem to be a little late here.
What does a Grad Work Permit mean? Is it different from the 2 year post graduate employment period offered to International students (exception-GTA and BC)?
I am on study permit and it expires in April 2005. So i need to change my status before that. Is this <Grad Work Permit> a rescuer here??
Peace

I am posting here a problem that I do not currently have but I think a lot of international students have this problem. Here goes...
Even if we can find employment for a year after graduation most employers are not willing to extend the work permits as it would require HRDC approval. We cannot get PR status within a year of graduation either as just to apply we need a one year work experience.
Most of my friends on graduate work permit are planning to go to school again after their one year graduate work permit expires because they do not want to go out of status in Canada or go back home as it takes longer in India to process the PR application.
Is there a way around this situation?
Has anyone found a solution to this?
HI! Peace,
Yes the Grad Work Permit is the permit given to work once you've graduated from your field of study . In the GTA you are allowed to work for only 1 year after you've graduated and in this case you don't need to get an HRDC approval. However you need to apply for change of status, which means you have to apply for a Work Permit (CIC). Also the job you get should be related to the field of your study.
