My wife is pregnant and we are arriving in Ontario next week. Since we will not be insured until May 2005 by OHIP, will the government cover the cost of gynaelogical check ups for my wife.

Does OHIP cover the cost of child birth after 3 months? Is childbirth covered 100% in Canada or are there any out of pocket expenses. What is the cost of a C-section?

I appreciate your replies at

Thanks,
Sam

OHIP does not cover any costs till you have been three months in Ontario. If your wife visits clinics for regular check ups it will cost her 20 - 30$ if everything is OK! No, OHIP will not cover the cost of childbirth if you have not completed 3 months in Ontario.
After three months, all costs of childbirth are covered except:
Car parking :)
Telephone Service :p
Rogers Cable Service :D
Separate Room (after delivery) Charges; per day
etc.
You can opt to use none of the above facilities :p

If your wife has not completed mandatory three months period, all expenses prior to that including
1.Family Doctors visit($20-$30), (after six months pregancy, family physician normally do not check and refer the patient to a Gynae)
2.Specialist Appointment,(each visit $75+),
3.Ultrasound($70+),
4.Tests($30+ depending on the tests) and
5.If the child is due before that all expense for child birth (whether normal or C sec) in the hospital has to be borne by you in cash.

6.Having the new charm in your family - "Price Less"

Only child will be covered automatically after the birth. No waiting for new born child.

I was in similar situation, but my wife's due date was much later than three months mandatory period, so I do not have to pay any delivery charges or tests fees or specialist fee except paid for couple for visit to family doctor, ultrasound - once and blood tests $30.
All the charges I am talking above are 2001 #, I do not know the latest #.
Please check the latest #.

I have heared there are some clinics providing cheap or subsidised services. I also read it some where in a post in CD. But I personally do not know contact info. Check the site perhaps you get it.:)

Hi All,

Thanks for your reply. I am arriving in February 2005 and my wife is due in October 2005. During the three months period is it very expensive to go for regular check ups and ultrasounds?

In usa, the gynae takes care of a pregnant woman from the first trimester onwards. Is it the same in Canada?

Thanks.

You should not worry about the delivery if the baby is due in October.

Only precaustion is in first three months you and your wife should be cautious.

Family doctor visit or ultrasound does not costs heaven that you should be worried about.

If you've paid for any of the medical expenses out of your pocket, retain the receipts, etc. You can later claim them on your tax return.
