Hi All,

We are relocating to TO in the month of May 1st week.

My wife is expecting our first child in the month of August 1st Week.

We dont have OHIP coverage and believe that it takes 90 days.

The questions are :

1) Is their anyway to get OHIP coverage
2) Does OHIP or govt provided any kind of medical facility to people in our condition
3) Is there any private insurance company that would provide coverage
4) If all else fails what is the cost of Deleviry and post costs

Also could someone recommend a good gyna.

Regards
Chandni

Hi,

You will be eligible for OHIP only after 90 days. So for the first 90 days, u need to take private insurance.

Check at http://www.bluecross.ca" rel="nofollow">LINK

First things first. Will you be flying on to Toronto ? If so, please check with your doctor if this is advisable.

As raajen mentioned .. 90 days wait time and go for private insurance.

You cannot let all else fail. You never know how much you might end up paying. Again, you cannot let all else fail.
Go for private insurance. I paid ~300 for Blue Cross per person in 2004.
But that buys lot of mental shanti.

Once you land, aftercompleting all your initial formalities, give a call to your regional govt office (can't remember what's it called) ... but they will guide you with lots of things and provide you with enough information and help.

As per my knowledge, Private insurance will not cover cost of delivery. They may not even insure, knowing that shes pregnant.

In Aug your health insurance OHIP would start so hopefully all should be fine, unless it becomes a little early delivery.

There are some govenment funded clinics where you can get FREE medical (sometimes medicines) while you are awaiting your OHIP. My wife was also pregnant when we arrived and we got excellent medical attention by Dr. Martin, a very reputed and retired gynaec offering volunteer services at the westhill community center at the intersection of markham and kingston roads in scarborough. I believe they have similar services in other cities as well. Contact the closest settlement organisation, they will provide you with the address.

All the best.

I do not know about your exact situation.

Traditionally, delivery was usually done in parents' home. If you have to pay everything out of your pocket then delivery in India maybe cost effective. (Assuming you are from India) Also loving care is required by mother and child atleast for one to two months after delivery. If you are alone you maynot be able to do both baby sitting, mom-sitting and your job. Nothing to beat traditional family care. If I were you, I would move temporarily to India for delivery. No tension, no worry.

But moving to native country for delivery may not be practical in your case.

Also you cannot take insurance against a certain thing. That is why delivery in a pregnancy is 'hard' to insure.

In current scenario you may like to

1. Take private insurance, against complications/premature delivery, for 90 days.
2. Find out good and cost effective friendly neighbourhood gynaecologist to call or to go to in case of emergency.
3. Be ready for sudden extra expense.
4. Pray to God that delivery is on time, by that time your OHIP will kick in.
5. Be relaxed and cheerful, do not pass on your tension (if any) to your wife. You want a healthy cheerful child!
6. Tie up with a friend with a car & cell phone to call in case of any emergency.
7. Early delivery maybe precipitated due to:
a. Stress: mental or physical
b. Sudden hard work/ lifting of weight etc.
c. Malnutrition
d. Other medical causes
so, try to avoid them.

Also please follow Hchheda's recommendations.

:)
