hi!
for first time comers, it does not matter where you land. why donot you land in Calgary, Alberta. The economy is better than Toronto, ON and medical care is from day 1. it does not matter where you land. you have to look for a new job where ever you land and apt. prices are less in calgary and job is more. when you come , it will be summer and you need to worry only around oct. 2006 for winter.
Though the delivery date is exactly 3 months from when you land, i will not take the risk .b'cos the baby can come early and you have to bear the expensed from your pocket ( i assume that you will not get insurance). I know that 4 in one room bed in a hospital costs $830 a night. with all other charges a private paid delivery could cost $2000 to $6000. in case of complications it would mess things further.
if i were you, i will land in Alberta ( that is the only choice)

Getting a job , anywhere in canada, depends on your skills , destiny, luck,network, ability to adjust to various cultures, superior english speaking skills, willing to work in a lower/ entry level position, possessing a car, possessing high education, being smart, being neatly trimmed, your resume being in the right hands at the right time etc... so one city does not score much more than the other

TK Saab,
Lovely advice but the hassle is the profession that I am in mainly exixts in either Vancouver or TO.
But what happens to people (immigrant or otherwise) who dont have the money or for some reason dont have a OHIP card. Do they in Hindi filmi style have children at home.Dont they get medical help from the goverment. SO much for one of the best countries to migrate to.

hi,
All info. you need is in this link.
http://www.toronto.ca/immigration/health.htm
Please confirm with a govt. health official (in ontario) for the facilities. see especially where they have indicated some FREE services to immigrants before 90 days after you immigrate. They tend to keep it vauge and so you need to confirm straight from the Lion's mouth (Govt. official). They include Pre natal but NOT post partum. It does not mention Labour but it might be included in Prenatal.
IF, labour and delivery facilities are not included in OHIP coverage before 90 days after immigrating to Ontario, the hospital will bill you and if you donot pay, refer you to a collection agency to get the payment from you. Your credit history will be bad then and you canot take a loan. if you have money and donot pay, legal action can be taken.
and BTW , what is your profession?

TK Saab,
Sitting with my wife in the middle of the night and mulling over what you said.
I had done my landing in the year 2003 (TO,ONT).
Now when I come back can I land in TO and then shift to ALberta. Or do I have to fly there directly.
Also would what you said about health care from 1st day of landing still hold good.
What about housing etc.And people.
You said Calgary...does it hold good for Edmonton also. What do you think.
With everyones permission will like to post this as an individual post also
Regards

Hello!
I did not read carefully your question. On further reading, i found our that, if you had landed in 2003 (though left shortly), you may still be considered for OHIP , based on the date you first landed in Canada. You have to confirm this with Health Canada. I canot give you the correct answer, since i donot know it.When the rules were first written, i am not sure if they anticipated situations like this. A Govt. official can only give you the correct answer or legal govt. documents.
Do you know that you need to have a PR card or a Temproary entry permit (if you donot have PR card) to enter from outside Canada (except USA-under certain conditions).
You can land anywhere in Canada and then move to any where of your choice in Canada. Health card provisions depend on the province you apply. so it is perfectly legal for you to land in Toronto and then move to alberta and then apply for health card in Alberta.
Though Edmonton is the capital of Alberta, Calgary or Fort Mac Murray is the place to be for jobs. Rents are lower in Alberta (calgary) when compared to Ontario (toronto). But only Toronto is flooded with desi's.
Also winter may be unbearable in Alberta. Toronto is much milder.

Sidenote :
FOR ALBERTA :An eligible resident of Alberta is a person who is:
legally entitled to be or to remain in Canada and makes his/her permanent home in Alberta;
committed to being physically present in Alberta for at least 183 days in a 12 month period (NOTE: Periods of temporary absence will be counted as being physically present in Alberta. If you are planning to be away for more than six months, contact our office.);
not claiming residency or obtaining benefits under a claim of residency in another province, territory or country;
any other person deemed by the regulations to be a resident not including a tourist, transient or visitor to Alberta
For B.C. -> 2 month waiting period + the end of the month you came in.
for eg. if you arrive on april 20, 2006, in BC your health coverage will begin on July 01/2006
