And oh, BTW - the sig. at the bottom of my posts reflects exactly what we are talking about.
And I've had the same sig. for over a year now !

How true it is that "History Repeats Itself" !

Oh...I agree with that. I think we have the same definitions of self-interests too. I think our difference arises in the fact that you are trying to justify these self-interest on moralistic grounds. While I see no justification is possible on those grounds.

As much as politics is supossed to serve at the macro level...most often it does not and world politics is often played out differently. Be it the war in Iraq, CIA etc. Yes the chickens do sometimes come home to roost too as the congress found out with the LTTE and again with Bhindranwale(sp?). As you sow so shall you reap. Its a balancing act with no clear recipie for definite success(that is a recurrent theme on CD :)).

As for the polls...its already been decided during the election(the ultimate poll). Or do you think BBC should be deciding on the president of the US :)?And I follow those bbc discussion boards too...and it was interesting during the iraqi elections when most of the 'Middle american' kind of westerners were deriding those election, most of the Iraqis were actually elated about it. One of them basically asked the westerners to shut up. Yes this was on the 'independent' bbc talkback boards. You can check it out if you have the archives.

The average citizen does have a chance to make their choice on the basis of their self-interest at the time of elections and they did. However, you seem to negate that and rely on BBC polls. Do you believe in democracy or not?

And the average citizen does not HAVE to work only for Haliburton to get the benefits for the war on Irag. He/she can receive that benefit by receiving a generous tip from the Haliburton employee whose post he delivers. Or the garbage man OR the nanny or the car salesman...etc who services the Haliburton folk. You see my point? I think you do, but you choose not to.

Also what you see in Bush and Partners as lying and deceit, I see it as strategy. Much like you attribute to Advani(and I agree) on the other thread. The' balls to stand up and deliver' that you also attribute to Vajpayee on that same thread.

About another hostile attack on the US soil...lemme see, you think that if they did not do anything they would be protected? WOW!...by that logic 9/11 should have never hapenned. Right now the funding and support for terrorists are drying up all over. Who are the ones who prop up these guys...Saudis, Pakistanis, Syria, Iran, Libya, Yemen. You think any of them are not feeling the squeeze. The Administration is 'following the $ trail' and have to stick on the course of action. With a big bloody stick to back it up this time. I think they understand that reasoning in the middle east.

Doing NOTHING was very bad option considering groups like Al qaeda are not exactly into round table discussions! Nor is there enough time to find out if they were abused in childhood.

Another attack MAY very well happen...but the other side have to put in much more effort and resources than they ever did.None of these groups have a secure base to operate from anymore and are on the run.

Also Agree with what you said in the other thread "If Advani rides on the cloud of the RSS and VHP, then most of the congress leaders ride on the horses of caste politics and regional differentiations - take your pick which is better and which is worse."

The same applies to Bush(orthodox judeo-christian value/interpretation based and nationalistic ideology) and democrats(left leaning, minority/secular leaning voting bloc). You cannot say that the right-wing is right in India but not in the US. I'm really curious why desis dont see the similarities. Anyone? Infact many of the die hard right nationalists in India do a sharp turn to the left when in the west.

So, at this time Bush seems to be meeting his goals in the interest(economic) of his nation, in the ways he knows best. It looks like he has killed a cpl of birds with the same stone. History will tell us if was the 'right' thing...if there is ever such a thing when it comes to world politics.

Patrick. I am not debating at all that the democrats did not have a strong candidate to counter Bush.

Jake, I think the time has now come when I should reveal to you that its Pratick, not Patrick. :D

Small yet huge difference. Either Pratick didn't notice it or he's too humble to point it out. :)

Sorry for the digression, guys. Continua!

Forget it - I get it all the time :(
In fact, it comes as a surprise if someone calls me Pratick.
I have to remind myself that it is me !
