The existence of a usually subtle but in reality a deeply rooted Caucasian caste system shatters the beliefs of a civilized western culture. It is obvious to the observer that caste system definately has its roots in tribal and racial descent. Followers of Indian caste system and white racial superiority are quite similar in exercising their malice towards others. It didn’t take very long for me to feel the pain of the Indian untouchables when I immigrated to North America. The North American racial pecking order is easily identifiable and is exactly the same venomous snake as our caste system. It rears its ugly head constantly and if you are an American/Canadian of Indian descent and have never experienced it you are definitely in a denial.
If you think us Indians are probably the only tribe hung up on light skin being more attractive and upper class, think again! My pragmatic flow chart of the North American caste system l has the white male WASP’s (white Anglo Saxon protestants) right on the top, followed by Catholics of European descent. All US presidents with one exception were WASP’s. John F Kennedy was the sole exception and probably met an untimely end because of his Catholic faith. Next you find the Asians of Far East descent, the yellow skinned people. All Japanese, Chinese, Koreans, Pilipino, Thai etc. are clubbed together by the racist ignoramus. The African Americans or blacks come next. Finally at the very bottom you have the Browns. People of Hispanics, Middle Eastern, Pakistani and Indian descent. A peripheral scrutiny of these facts will reveal that the WASP is the Brahmin, the Catholic whites are the Kshatriyas, the Far East Asians are the Vaishaya, the Blacks are the Shudra and the Browns are the untouchables. The US/Canadian majority even created a quota system in the 70’s, just like in India, to assist the weaker people.
Now if you think that some red neck in Alabama or Alberta knows the difference between an Indian of Brahmin descent and an Indian of Shudra descent you are probably on tranquilizers and are attempting to lull yourself into abandonment of consciousness. All of the proof is in the existing day to day realities. Just open a North American magazine, watch TV (including news and commercials) go to a shopping mall and you will see that the above statements have incredible merit. The faces you see in mass media are usually White and some of Black and Far East Asian descent. There is a small albeit rare token representation of Hispanics and South Asians.
The undertones of dislike most Caucasians harbor for Indians are exactly the same that upper castes maintain towards the lower castes in India. I have come across so many articles where expatriate Indians have patted themselves on the back for being successful and dominant in the fields of medicine, IT, business etc. in the US or Canada. They are being hypocritical and are in a denial of their authentic existence. They are just trying to make themselves feel better. You may be Mr. Goswami, a Brahmin doctor living in a mansion in suburbs of New Jersey, wearing an Armani suit, driving a Mercedes Benz but for the Caucasian onlooker you are still an Indian untouchable.
The majority makes every attempt in not hiring Indians because we are a short, smelly ugly brown fellows. They won’t promote us because they believe that no one will respect our authority. They are hesitant to serve us in a restaurant as our people don’t tip enough. No one approaches us in an exclusive store to sell us something because they think we should be heading towards the big discount store chain. People don’t want to sit next to us because they think we probably smell of BO (curry smell on your clothes is a reality and not a myth). We are usually perceived as cab drivers or convenience/gas/ dollar store clerks. Our accents bring Sunday night comic relief to the majority. My own German descent brother in law with my Italian sister in law sold their house and relocated as soon as a Tamil family bought the house next door. Our accomplishments are buried at the very bottom of the perverted superficial notions of the North American majority upper caste or simply known as “goras”.
Welcome to the North American caste system and feel the excruciating pain of millions of low caste Indians. Someday hopefully this world will move beyond tribes and descents and begin concentrating on individuality. You may call it a Utopia dreamt by Jean Paul Sartre. Until that dawn of a new civilization the color of your skin, your race, your caste, your father/mothers last name, your education, your economic status, your physical attributes etc. will be the shackles you must learn to live with.
I am Raj, an Indo-Aryan, Kshatriya and a North American untouchable.
Thought-provoking article
India has castes, and immigrant countries have racism. Generalizing may not be a good idea, but these are the things which we feel when live a life in a particular place as a first hand experience!
I guess, root of the social evils like these is the lack of humility and a tendency to prove superiority.
Regards.
We Indians are definetly like fair skin.
I will give 2 examples:
1) A few years ago when I visited India I was on the road along NOIDa (outside Delhi). Along the road you will se ads for upcoming housing/apartments in Greater Noida. The folks in the Ads were not Indian. They were 'Caucasian'. Whitel, blond hair etc....
Unless the new housing was being catered to those people (which I dont think it was), the ad was a reminder of the above trait.
2) My grandmother was herself of wheatish complexion. I remember her saying this on many occasions when someone asked her if a girl would be right for the boy. She would say "wo to kali hai". Quite incredible. Either there is an element of self hate here or I dont know what it is.
"Kali Kalutti" - A term which is usually used in North India, almost as an insult.

I once made a mistake, but I was wrong about it.
