A person on either work permit or study permit will need to apply for TRV if they need a visa to enter Canada.
For example, an Australian national who acquires a study permit will not have to apply for a TRV to enter Canada and study, but an Indian national who acquires a study permit will need to obtain a TRV in addition to the study permit to enter Canada and stay here.
I am not entirely sure what the OP Dude means exactly.
AFAIK, Canada does not have a separate student visa category unlike the US.
Canada has study permit + TRV.
I imagine that his study permit expired after a point, but his TRV was either valid or he applied for another TRV (or an extension of the same TRV) to remain in Canada.

Pratickm is Right ..... But the only thing I would like to correct is ---
One does not need TRV to remain in Canada... You can stay in Canada only with Study/Work Permit (Or any other permit) but if once you exit Canada you can not re-enter ... That's when you need TRV to re-enter...

Thanks for sharing this wonderful info. I need some more information. I will be landing in Toronto In August 05 on a temporary work permit, so at the earliest when can I apply for PR?? Since the timeline in this thread suggests that it will take roughly two years for the processing and my job contract at present is for two years only, I would prefer to do it ASAP. I am a Ph.D in applied sciences and will be taking a postdoc job at UT.
