Is it essential to carry Rs.5-6 Lacs worth of dollars with you when landing at Canadian Airport for the 1st time?
Since nowdays in India we have ATM cards which are valid throughout the world, we can withdraw money as and when required. Will an ATM card satisfy the immigrating autorities when they check the money brought in by immigarnts?
I don't think so but you shoudl check with conulate in India and get a written reply if you want to use any such alternative method.
This is very interesting thought - now let us think from the immigration officers stand point.
1. How to check the balance money - you might have bank statement. As it is ATM it doesn't make sure that you have not withdrawn any money after that.
2. There might be few more card holders (bank home) for the same account, so how you convince the officer that you are the only user of this card?

Garvo I was also wondering how they'll get convinced.....
I do not knoe how advanced the immigration authorities are in Canada. These days our accounts can be accessed on the net so if they have a laptop with net connectivity they can see it online that there is enough balance in my account. I am also trying to find out if I can get my balannce through SMS. I am still probing.
Regarding more than one cards for the same account...good i will carry letter from the bank stating that i am the only single user. But I'll still think over it.
Canadians are very clever. They have already listed on their site and they send u a letter also that the money has to be brought in the form of::
1. Marketable security (which can be sold in Canada).
2. Bank Draft (no personel cheques) or Traveller cheques
3. Cash.
So, no promisory notes of private people or banks etc OR any kind of credit or debit cards will be accepted..
And make sure that the money U R getting into Canada must also be entered on your Passport.
Remember friends:: In Canada evrything boils down to Money...

why should canadians bother whether money is entered in the passpoert or not (though when a bank in India is giving money, they enter in the passport anyway)
Do canadians really check how much money you have brought in at the time of landing?
Bangalorean
yes they do check and can/will hod your passport and other documents upon landing. You are allowed to enter canada but will have to produce the evidence that the funds have arrived in canada before you get your documents.
The officer has full authority to send you back as well.
Besides coming without inadequate funds, in my opinion, is why immigrants face such bumpy reception in Canada.
"why should canadians bother whether money is entered in the passpoert or not (though when a bank in India is giving money, they enter in the passport anyway)"
this is because of an agreement with Govt. of India.
