We have been to Saravana Bhavan (SB), Udipi Palace (UP) and Madras Dosa Hut (MDH) as well. MDH used to be at Eglington X Dixie, but now moved to Rathburn.
We went to MDH way back in 2001, really liked the food, svc, rate and overall atmosphere. No complaints. But then we went to same place on Saturday eve and Oh my God....it was a nightmare...our order was served after like 40 mins....impossible to believe but that's the fact. So we decided not to go there anymore.
Then abt in 2002, we tried UP at Gerrard St, liked the food, rates, qty etc. But again, went there on Sat eve and the similar exp.
Later we tried SB, for the first time in may 2004 (unfortunatley Sat eve)...and the kind of food, svc, qty we exp, made us decide never to go there again.
And we went to MDH at Rathburn a month after that, but not on a Sat eve....everything was OK !!!!!!!!!!
So we decided to try SB on Monday eve a month after and walla...we had a gala time....good svc, food, extra chutney, no complaints. But again, we went there last Sat eve and same exp of nightmare.
Moral of the story...never go to these restaurants on Sat eve.

Food in Sarvana Bhawan is best. However, theu should reduce their price alittle bit.

Driller the thriller
I had been to Novelty last week and we paid just $40 for buffet dinner for four. The previous week I was in Saravana Bhavan and we paid $90 for four of us. We still had to buy some deserts outside. Food is authentic and good in Saravana Bhavan but the prices are very high. The ambience again doesn't warrant these high prices. Canteen style set up and five star prices. Something wrong some where. I know for sure the tips are taken by the owner and therefore I did not add tips. Why pay more to the owner of SB when he is already looting.
Brar, village of India and Novelty are reasonably priced and for 6.99 to 7.99 there are a mumber of good dishes to make you happy.
We need a good competition for SB who I feel are exploiting the situation being the one and only authentic south Indian food chain in Toronto
It is pathetic to see people talking about things they do not know about and spreading lies. This is in response to raj21. My friend, if you are not sure about something, please do not assume things about a restaurant. I am a regular customer at Saravana Bhavan and make it a point to tip when I recieve good service. I do this because I have made the effort to find out that the tips are distributed amongst the employees of the restaurant and do not go to the owner. I do not know where you received your information from, but being a regular customer, I can guarantee you that it is not true.
On another note, a very good restaurant to check out is Karma. They have great food and a very enjoyable atmosphere.
Until next time...Keep Eating
Food is surely better than Madras Dosa hut...but they should reduce the price's a bit....sometims feels like they r giving u God's prasad ( quantity wise )..lol
