I too am on WOrk permit and applied for my PR and got married in between.
I was able to get my wife on visitor visa from India.
Hi CF,
Why would you be going for visitor visa? instead you can go for dependent visa which surely consulate will give considering the fact that you have enough funds to support her.
dipenparekh,
I blv you brought your wife before your PR application was approved. As afterwards it would be pretty difficult to get visitor visa for spouse as CIC obv knows that she would be staying here only to get PR.
MeagainMe,
Yes you are right, i called my wife on tourist visa, when my PR application was in process.
CUrrently I am on HRDC approved work permit and she is on open work permit.

When a person is on work permit and he/she brings his spouse, the Canadian Govt. gives the spouse an open work permit , meaning that they can work in what ever field that they want to (except Nursing and Teching) and in what ever company that they want to in Canada. The other person (who is on work permit) is tied to a particular company that sponsered him for work permit. These people can apply for PR.
People on work permit and their spouses get free medical and free schooling. They pay taxes to the Govt. from their salary. They donot need to wait for so many years for immigration. Just come to Canada and file for PR. This is a short cut to many.
I know a case in which a lady is in Canada on work permit. She brought her spouse on Open work permit, who sits at home and cooks. They had a child here who is a cdn. citizen.
The forum may want to debate if this is ethical or not seeing that we had mixed response (mostly negetive) to another person's query.. Just some food for CD's thought.

In my opinion it is a very good & Canadian govt. should encourage people on this kind of visa to apply for immigration. If you ask me, they should first give PR status to people who are on work visa's as they have proved that they can assimilate into the work culture. Also since they have been offered a job, their credentials (work & education) are valid.
They should encourage industry to hire people from outside & then provide immigration facilities to these people.
That is the idea of immigration - getting people into the economy who can help to improve or sustain it.
