I am going to be 65 year old soon, my daughter sponsored us and we came to
canada last year,
stayed for 4- 5months,
filed taxes

and now we are in India. I was told that I have to be back in Canada within 6 months. Is it true? How would it effect my future in Canada? what would happen if I come back to Canada after 1 year. Please advice.
thanks
asha

You have to be present in Canada for every 2 years out of last 5 years period to be considered as the PR of Canada. If you are planning on coming back after 1 year, make sure that you still have time to complete your 730 days in the 5 yr period.

Thankyou for replying. Someone was saying that there is a pension program for 65 and older?

On the other hand I have heard that it would not apply to me because we have to meet two conditions

1. stay for 10 years in canada
2. be 65 and older.

Is it true?
Is there any benefit for 65 and older that I might lose?

Thanks again.

Not for six months but they do have to keep their residency in order to return as PR

Please read through the Old Age Security (A Type of pension that you can get after 10 years of stay here in Canada) The requirements are, that you be resident of Canada for a Minimum of 10 years to qualify for 10/40 percentage points of the total pension. Also, you must be here for the WHOLE (Full) year on the last year to get that 25%.

The Government of Canada has publications that you can obtain by calling the toll free number and ask them to mail a hard copy for your reading. They also answer over the phone if there are any more doubts and questions you might have after reading. A local resident can do that for you and keep the mail on hold for you to pick. You can read and mark down your specific questions after that.

You can also ask them if staying within the borders a day over six months constitute an years stay or counts as an year, towards the qualifying time. (Most of the snow birds do that)

You will get to know all of the terms that we use here after you read through the
booklet on OAS.

Here is something to read on the web while you are sojourning there in India.

http://www.rhdsc.gc.ca/en/publications_resources/service_providers/public_pensions/presentation/page03.shtml

That should get you started.

Hope this helps you in deciding how long you would like to stay there to take advantage of the OAS pension. You said that you are 65 now. So, you are in the ff start of the First year of qualification for the OAS. See if you can fill in the six months+a day for this year.

Freddie.
