Dear Mr. Massood,
At the outset, I would like to thank you for your generous gesture of offering your valuable time and advice to all of us.
My mother and grandmother have recently been granted a 10 year multiple entry visa to the US (where my uncle lives) and a 6 month single entry visa to Canada where I reside.
My questions are as follows:
1. We intend driving down and picking them up from my uncle's place. Will the date when they enter Canada be the date for their six month countdown in Canada?
2. I read on the canadian high commision website
(http://www.dfait-maeci.gc.ca/asia/new-delhi/site/visitingcanada-en.asp)
that if one has visitor visa for US and single entry visa for canada one can travel to and fro for the six month period without any problem. Is this true?
3. Can my mom, at the end of her six month stay in Canada go back to US and reapply for another visitor visa from US to Canada? Or would she have to necessarily go back to India and reapply? What are her chances of being granted a visa?
4. Lastly, if she is granted a mutiple entry visa to Canada and since she already has a 10 year multiple entry to US can she travel between canada and US without returning to India? I mean, can she stay for 6 months in canada, 6 months in US and back to Canada for another 6 months and so on for as long as her multiple entry visa is valid? Or would she have to go back to India? Its just that it would save air travel cost if she can circumvent having to go back to India.
Thank you once again for your time and advice.
warm regards
Well, I can try to help. I am not Massood though
1. We intend driving down and picking them up from my uncle's place. Will the date when they enter Canada be the date for their six month countdown in Canada?
>>>>>Yes
2. I read on the canadian high commision website
(http://www.dfait-maeci.gc.ca/asia/new-delhi/site/visitingcanada-en.asp)
that if one has visitor visa for US and single entry visa for canada one can travel to and fro for the six month period without any problem. Is this true?
>>>>> Canada allows multiple entries into Canada only from the US on a Canadian single entry visa. Irrespective of what US visa they have, if subsequent entry is from another country other than US, the single entry visa for Canada is not valid.
3. Can my mom, at the end of her six month stay in Canada go back to US and reapply for another visitor visa from US to Canada? Or would she have to necessarily go back to India and reapply? What are her chances of being granted a visa?
>>>>> No, she does not have to go to India for another Canadian visa application. However, the Cdn consulate might ask more questions before issuing a visa. However again, prior travel and entry into Canada will help in her chances of getting a visa.
>>>>> Yes. She needs to surrender her I-94 the last time she leaves US for that particular trip, so that, after her 6 mo stay in Canada, she can get a new I-94, thereby, obtaining a fresh 6 month stay period in the US.
Or would she have to go back to India?
>>>>>> No.

That was very useful information. Thanks Dimple!
Maybe this helps too
My Mom originally came to Canada in July 2003, got her visa extended twice and she left Canada in Jan 2005 to US, Lived there for 1 year (actuallyoverstayed 7 months) and she entered again in March 2006 and got another 6 months
Offcourse the officer asked us to pull near the border (Canadian) and get visa stamped inside the office. They asked us the reason, the officer was real friendly
She has Multiple Entry Visa which expires in April 2006 and the officer reminded me to get it renewed when she was to enter again
Now, the important question is, no one asked her I-94 and the only proof that she overstayed in US is that stamp when she entered canada this time (March 2006) and its buried in those numerous other stamps
Me and my parents have visited US over 10 times in past 20 years and never surrendered I-94, now how does that really work...when we re-enter do they see the amount of ex-passports and stamps which kinda shows one's intention of "Visitor" only
