We are moving to Toronto soon. Most accommodations we have searched have electric (convection) cooking hobs. Is LPG/LNG (cooking gas) not available for domestic use? If it is, then is it piped-in or you need to get cylinders? Also, what about the central heating/hot water? Is is generally gas or electric/oil based?

On similar lines, most properties that have ensuite laundry seem to have seperate washing machine and tuble dryer. I am aware that euopean style combination washer-dryer are available in Toronto but why are they not popular?

Any insights most appreciated.

Mostly apts or basements have electric stoves. Houses have choice. The Gas which is used for heating can be piped to provide gas stove cooking. Many old houses over 40 years of age still has oil heeting and very poor insulation.

Most older apartment buildings and multi-level Condos do not have gas piping installed. And by all accounts, they cannot be retrofitted either. Some newer multi-level condos have gas fireplaces and stoves. These are usually the higher-end of the market.

Most single family homes on the other hand, usually have gas piping pre-installed. If it is slightly older, a retrofit is required to get gas into the kitchen and the laundry (approx $150-$250).

Combination washer-dryers are not popular because they don't do either of the jobs well. Although the front-loading style is now catching on.

Regards
BV

Thanks for your replies. I thought Canada was a "green" contry and CNG is better than oil/electricity in this regard. It is also cheaper (atleast in Europe and Asia) than electricity. But hey when in Canada, do as the Kanucs do. I am not sure I agree with the comment about washer-dryer though. the good ones are really good at both, in addition to being multi-function programmable and fully automated. In addition, they save a good amount of space. Perhaps Europe and East-Asia are more technologically advanced than the Americas.

I was checking the so-called high-speed internet availability in Toronto and it made me laugh for the speed and price. I think in Singapore you can get 6MBPS true-broadband, truly unlimited usage/connection time for far less than whats on offer here.

I suppose I should not even think about 3G or I-Mode services?

Cheers!

You get a 2 MBPS line for around CAD 41 and 6 MBPS for around CAD 55 in Singapore (from the link provided by you). You will get it at roughly the same price in Canada too. 3MPBS for about and 6 MBPS for about CAD 30+GST from 3Web.

Rogers would cost about 45+GST and 50+GST (including modem rental fee) for 3 and 6 MBPS line.

How do you find it ridiculously expensive compared to Singapore?

See the link.

I do not know if anybody is offering 30 MBPS connection for domestic use.
