Please check the thread called \"Any tamils here\", and how well it progressed in terms of roll call, but it did not materialize in any form of meeting.

Speech by Thomas Friedman of The New York Times....
"When we were young kids growing up in America, we were told to eat our
vegetables at dinner and not leave them. Mothers said, 'think of the
starving children in India and finish the dinner.' And now I tell my
children: 'Finish your maths homework. Think of the children in India
who would make you starve, if you don't.'"
This is the big draback of Tamils. They cling on to each other as if there is no one else in the world. Most Tamils refuse to come out of their imaginary cocoon. Trust me, I am Chennai and has seen enough of Tamils, be in USA or in Canada.
FYI, Tamils are everywhere in Scarborough area. U should move their and be happy wiht your people.
IMO, once u come out of India, all are same. But we Indian born refuse to learn and bring all the inhibitions to the foreign land when we migrate. A good friend of mine, a kannadiga (from karnataka) bitterly complains abt. casteism in the community. That too done by old timers.
So go figure!

Hi,
There is a group called MACA (Madras Arts and Cultural Academy). They do have the celebrations including tamil classes for kids. You need to pay the membership of C$25 per year.
Though I am not a SriLankan Tamil but still I feel hurt with your comments of referring most of them as Labourers and uncompeting IQ.
You are probably oblivious to the fact that the majority of Tamils in Srilanka are (were) Professionals and Educated scholars before they found Canada as their home citing the clash back home.
I pretty much feel the same in Canada coz, I happened to meet 4-5 Srilankan tamils from Canada, most of them were Professionals. There might be people who might continue to do a blue collar job and in process of transitioning.
I pretty much understand that the interests of Srilankan Tamils may be different from Tamilians from Tamil Nadu. I beleive the member who started this thread is looking for people who share the common interest of Tamils such as Movies/Comedies, Jaya/Karunanidhi, Developments in Chennai and some other similarities to feel more at home till they get habituated to the Canadian Way.
This is the reason people look for other people from their region/culture to get a grip of things in a foreign land and ease the stress of settling.
The comments from other member was equally offending and sarcastic about the Tamils in general. Please stop making comments like You Tamils!!! You Gujjus!! You Telugus etc.., it doesn't sound any good but unveil boorish, immature and inward lookings..
I apologize if any one found my postings harsh...
Good luck.

Desi in Ottawa,
You are mistaken about tamils.
There are 2 kinds of tamils.
1. Sirlankan tamils -> mostly refugees. Live in Scarborugh. Their cultre and habits are different from Indian Tamils. They are mostly Labourers.
2. Indian Tamils -> There are in canada only for the past 4 or 5 years. Very highly educated and professionals. Have very high IQ.
This guy Gokul is an Indian Tamil. He will feel at place only with Indian Tamils who are NOT in scarborough. Maybe most of them are in Mississauga.
Hope now it is clear.
Thanks
Tamilkuravan
