Can a group of people fighting for a cause - branded as terrorists - ever get anyone in the world on their side?

I am all for protesting but once you spill over and block traffic etc....not good.

I may not know the ground facts, but it does SEEM like the LTTE is using the civilians as Human shields and the tamils all over are asking the Govt. to stop? Shouldn't they be kicking the LTTE who is causing this genocide?

Coincidently, another post in CD relating to Mahatma Gandhi reflects peoples ignorant views about that great man - we can see from these incidences what the difference is between a terrorist and freedom fighter.

I maybe mis-informed/wrong - but this is what I collect from the news stories I have been reading.

*peace*

Yep, i am sympathetic to the tamil cause.
they did what ever humanely possible to assert their equality in Sri lanka but the Singalese did not recogonise their plight. So the LTTE was formed and took arms. The world did not intervene to make right the problem and hence they took arms and fought. In the meantime, they got branded as a terrorist organaisation and the whole world shunned them.
It is a catch 22 situation with respect to the LTTE/PLO/ Hamas. The world does nothing and when they take up arms/ violence then they are branded as terrorists.
LTTE assasinated (which they realised as a big mistake) Rajiv ghandi and turned India against them for ever. How can (atleast) the congress support an oraganaisation which was responsible for the assasiantion of their past party leader.
The people who suffer are the tamil civilians and the child army of LTTE. There is a silver lining to this suffering as many tamils were able to get refugee status in the west and now send money to their relatives in SL/India etc,.. who have not been able to go west. On the bad side, they do send 10% of their salaries to the LTTE for the freedom fight (according to the tamils) and this helps LTTE to buy arms.
Again this struggle (similar to Rawanda, Soalia) will not see any significant western intervention as the west is really not concerned about the outcome. It is very interested // concerned in the palestenian cause b'cos it affect the relation of the middle east (only for Oil purposes) and the lobbying of Israel in USA.
hope peace comes to SL and to the Tamils in Sri Lanka (though I donot see any indications)

Isn't this the same problem with Al-Qaeda. They also think that world doesn't care for them & so they took arms in their hands. I would certainly brand this group as terrorist.

So I have only heard this from media before that Tamils send money to their native to support the terrorism. But now I think this is a fact.

While roaming around Toronto sometimes I certainly feel that I am sitting or standing beside a terrorist who may not be carrying a gun by himself but surely provide support for that.

provides support, yes... but based on what some sl tamil friends tell me, it is not that they have an option as well... if they don't send money, their parents or relatives back in sl will get harassed by ltte... in the end, its the civilians who looses...

Governments support governments. Once a group is branded as terrorist, no matter how noble their cause, they seldom get a government's support. Generally speaking.

My post was more geared towards the form of protest that might actually backfire on the Tamils. You cannot afford to wreak havoc, cause delays for hours and ask for sympathy at gun-point so to speak.

You will get attention, you will NEVER get sympathy.
