Canada's SNK to fill vacancies with NRIs

Indo-Asian News Service

Chennai, February 9, 2006

The Overseas Manpower Corp (OMC), a Tamil Nadu government undertaking, has signed a pact with Canada's SNK International Ltd to supply it skilled workforce to fill 3,000 vacancies.

\"OMC has to send the first batch of 100 skilled workers to Canada by April,\" said OMC Managing Director S. Natarajan here Thursday.

OMC signed the memorandum of understanding with the company based in Calgary, Alberta, on Jan 24.

Graduates of vocational colleges and diploma holders with 10 years of work experience below the age of 40 had the best of chance for overseas employment, the company said. Welders and fitters could earn Rs.100,000 a month in Canada.

\"As much as 40 percent of the jobs are for electricians and welders,\" Natarajan said.

\"The selected candidates have to pass a written test. They should also be physically fit to live in the harsh climatic conditions. The workers can apply for citizenship after two years,\" he said.

Does anyone know about people being recruited like this from India?

I don't think it is citizenship. It could applying for PR status. My friend in software field was hired in Bombay pre Y2K crazy days. She could apply for PR status in two yrs and they get qualified under points system as they already have jobs in Canada. Then it is normal process for getting citizenship.

If we study this with a honest heart, we will realize these are the people this country needs. In a sense it is high time they brought in the right type of "Skilled" immigrants.

In a jocular note, in India, Southern India always complains that the Northern India, dominates the whole country and the southeners are getting a raw deal. In tamil it is spoken as "Therku Theikirathu, Vadaku Valarkirathu".

As we find certain parts of Canada filled with immigrants from certain states in India, southern India is getting a chance to fill the rest. Hope at a later time they do not go the Quebec way and ask for Independant Brampton or Independant Canadian Tamil Nadu!

Speech by Thomas Friedman of The New York Times....

"When we were young kids growing up in America, we were told to eat our
vegetables at dinner and not leave them. Mothers said, 'think of the
starving children in India and finish the dinner.' And now I tell my
children: 'Finish your maths homework. Think of the children in India
who would make you starve, if you don't.'"

As the article rightly says, the majority of people that Canada requires are welders, fitters, electricians, plumbers, truck-drivers, construction workers (in India it is done by "mama" - a gujarati word).

To my surprise, there was a article in yesterday's Calgary Herald which mentioned that the maximum shortage for manpower in Canada is for Sales Representatives.

To think of it, I have 15 years of sales experience with recognition for best Sales Executive, best Sales Manager in India. I guess I don't measure upto Canadian standards, it being a developed country.

As per the article in the Calgary Herald, maximum shortage of people is felt in the following professions :

The Manpower survey says the top 10 jobs that employers are having difficulty filling in Canada are (ranked in order):
1. sales representatives
2. customer service representatives/customer support
3. engineers
4. drivers
5. mechanics
6. labourers
7. chefs/cooks
8. electricians
9. skilled trades
10. nurses
