Hello people,
I recently got my Canadian Citizenship and i wanted to try to drive to New York (The greatest city in the world near Toronto).
I wanted our desi members to tell me about New York in a desi way
Like :
1. Where to stay cheap or free
2. How to eat cheaply or freely
3. What to see in a Desi way (out of the ordinary places)
4. What to be careful of (Parking , Laws, Conduct etc..).
I would appriciate all views.
Thanks
TK

GURUDWARA ( The Sikh Temple)

You may search Gurudwaras in New York at Google.com

All the best with your trip.

Are you planning to take car? Parking in Ney York city is very expensive. Locally you may have to travel by subway. We had taken our car but we took subway everywhere except on Sunday, we drove around New York.

Congrats on your citizenship.

When we visited NY a few years ago, we moved around using public transit. MTA has a daily & weekly pass which works out be very economical. Check it out here - http://www.mta.info/

If you're driving around NY watch out for right turns on a red light. It's prohibited in some places.

Driving to NY, suggest take 401 E to I-81 (thru Vermont). That way you save toll on I-90 (every penny counts !!!), and I-81 has less traffic. The route may be longer by 50kms or so.

On a side note - I'm guessing you'll need US cash. Try the State Bank at either Mississauga, Downtown or Scarborough. Their rate is better than the big 5.

SS and others,
thanks for the info.. I had been Googling about New York and was able to find all the info. about it. I was also asking CD members what to gain in New York with a desi perspective which canot be got over the internet.
(e.g.) Like if some free stuff is given in New York on a particular weekend, i can be at that place on that day (or) a weekend delivery of some stuff to New york, where you get paid to drive to new york and deliver the goods.

Well TK..if thats your definition of 'desi'.. I would rather call myself a 'firang'.:( ..grow up man and stop looking for 'Free' stuff..getting paid to drive to NY is bearable..but looking for 'Free' stuff.:( .I think you are going overboard..maybe you can checkout stuff for free on CD classifieds:D :D

Congrats on your citizenship (what did you recite for the oath?)
