I think good customer service is an expectation that is held by people regardless of ethnicity. I did not say in my earlier post that all indians or non canadians provide poor CS.

Given that one has the experience & other skills required for the job, do you think customer service is so difficult a skill that it cannot be acquired? All companies do have orientation & training sessions in which these things can be taught.

I dont know. My experience tells me that if one has experience/training and if Customer service is not hard..then why are people forgetting to use it? (please realize I gave a small segment of the immigrant population example)

Whenever one changes a job in India or even in Canada or say a person working in India gets a job in the Gulf or a person goes to US on H1 visa, one has to learn new systems since each company has a different way of operating. Doesn't require a person to start his career all over again.

I agree with you. Its hard when I read newspaper editorials regarding economic growth in the province and the need for skilled workers and the government suggestion to bring more skilled workers through immigration. Its sad that no one mentions the current pool of immigrants currently residing here. I think people should become very active in getting their views out to the media. Its often Employers that need 'diversity training'.

My point earlier, Morning rain, was that I know of people who have worked as a security guard or in a factory doing labour work after coming to Canada. Subsequently they have got a job in their original field of work. How does this security guard or snow shovelling job help him?

At the very least it has given them some income until they were able to return to their field. Thats just a thought. There probably are no right answers :)

yesterday I came to know of a job in a bank where you have to seal the envelopes by licking them & for that you get paid $11 an hour whereas my retail sales job which definitely requires more skills used to pay me $8.5 per hour.

Rgds.

Is envelope stuffing the only duty of the person in the bank?

hi MR,
In India , there is a system of reservation for specific type of people who were discriminated from the society in earlier ages. Those discriminated people are given special previlages in Govt. employment , education, college/ mess fees concession etc... This has helped to uplift people from the discriminated class with a chance to be at par with uplifted people.
for example : An engineers son with 95% marks can get a govt. seat, where as a scavenger's son with 50% mark can get the same seat (provided the former is in uplifted class and the latter in down trodden class. This has really helped all indians to be equal. Now the only disadvantage is that it has come to a state where the children of all those who got jobs and education through the reservation system are now ready to be educated through that reservation system. So many legitimate persons donot get a chance to use this reservation system. It canot be changed due to political reasons (Similar to health care system of Canada. It is stretched to the limit. If the ruling party cuts the funding to the health care then it will not win the next election)
For your thought ->
imagine if the govt. of Canada put a rule that all jobs in the govt. which does not require a professional degree to be given to Aboriginals and that Gora's in those jobs need to find their own jobs in the private sector (which they can , since Canada has a lot of jobs for Gora's and it is easy for them to get jobs. It will just be hard work and lesser pay.)
In one generation, No aboriginal would be living the cold north. Everyone will be in govt. jobs and getting goog pay. Since they get good salary, they will educate their children well and the children will go to university with student loan and then they will get govt. jobs while their parents retire from their jobs. So the soceity will be at par.
Of course , what i have said above is just a joke. It is not and will not happen. I was just trying to explain my point.

I am aware of the 'scheduled caste' system in India. There are reserved seats etc. There are similar 'employment equity ' and 'affirmative action' policies in different provinces for government jobs, university seats etc.

Employment equity considerations are for people who are: visible minorities, disabled, immigrants and women.

who are the legitimate that need to use this system?

Thank you for the info. That prepares me for the fair. Now I shall go prepared with the info on the organisations I am interested in. One more doubt, it may sound naive :

dress code - needless to say it has be a suit or a blazer?

And I liked the mela example.

Consider going to the Mela. You have stalls out there. This is the same thing. There are stalls aka booths of various organizations. Go directly to the ones you're interested. They'll either -
1. Take you resume and tell you that they'll get in-touch with you (this will happen only if they're really crowded)
2. Look at your resume and speak to you for a few minutes, again depends on how crowded they are and if they're interested in your skill.
3. Look at your resume and speak to you at length

Remember you get only a few minutes to impress upon them. So be at your best, dress up well. Wait times tend to vary a lot, could be anywhere from 5 minutes to 30 minutes (I guessing here). But if you're really interested in the organization, be prepared to wait.

Try reaching early for the following reasons -
1. 1st thing in the morning everyone's fresh. At the end of the day they're all tired and just wat to get out from there
2. Beat the crowd
3. Gives you time to look around and short-list the organizations which interest you. You should have already done that. The list is normally available at their website

I fully agree with you on this one. I have met some Englishmen who too complain about 'not having Canadian experience'. So this 'discrimination' - hope this is not too harsh a word, is not restricted based on the colour of your skin but more by the fact that you are an immigrant.

Quote:

Similarly, cross cultural communication is a very interesting topic. Indian english seems to have its own slang..canadian english its own slang and even american english its own slang. British english has unique words and meanings. There is cross cultural communication happening when a british "gora" speaks to an american "gora".

My interpretation of your post was that you have equated non-Canadian experience with non-professionalism. Thanks for your clarification.
Quote:

I hope I did not convey that I assume all non-canadians are non professional. I know this through experience that this is in no way true. My goal is to contribute to this discussion.
