If you encounter this, take the nearest exit (if on a highway and the traffic crawls-Luckily in Ontario, it is extremely rare for the traffic to be stopped completely). There are always fast food places near the exits of highways.
If on a regualr road, go to the nearest Tim's, Mac donalds, Wendy's, Loblaws etcc (these places always have public washrooms).
Also it is good to have a bottle of water with you and a can of drinking water in the boot. You might need this sometime.
Also in winter, dress appropriately. if the temp. is -30 deg. cent, you donot want to be in slippers and t-shirt b'cos in case of break down or accident and you need to stand outside in the cold weather, then your dress will be a disadvantage.

BL, Thank you for saving the thread.

Meghal, Thanks for the info. I know how it feels ovce you have exceesive fluid. I have been stuck in such situations in Mumbai traffic. Luckily when the car had a driver and the traffic crawled the solution was easy.;) But here I am going to be extra careful.

I used to travel 72 kms from markham [steeles and mccowan] to oakville [trafalgar road] one way...
did that about 4 months... but then I couldnt take it any more.. I moved to mississauga.. my normal travelling hours were in the morning..used to leave my home at 8.20 and was due to reach my work place at 10... the problem is crossing Toronto.. once u r on 427 then it is OK>....I used to take the 401 west..upto 427...then 427 south..and get on the QEW...the traffic on the 401 during peak hours is a mess..specially around Keele area...
Returning was not bad for me.. around 8 pm, the roads r pretty much OK..
BUt the biggest problem for me was on Friday..I used to work only 5 hours on friday..getting off at 3.30pm... and to reach from Oakville to Markham was a headache.. sometimes it used to take me 2 and half hours....
If I didnot encounter traffic, then the normal travel time is around 1 hr.. considering 100kms/hr speed... and if u got stuck in the traffic, then only GOD can help..
I was fed up with the travelling.. and used to get tired by the time I reach home..and all that I could think after reaching home was to go to bed..
Travelling during summer is much better, but winter travelling...and that too when there is a significant snow fall.. I would not even try...
Fortunately, I was able to move just before winter in OCtober... so was OK after that for me.. now my commute is only 15 minutes..and even on a stormy day, it increases to a max. of 30 minutes..
Many people who do commute is caz of some circumstances..either they have already bought a home or due to kids school.. or some other problem
I would say if u know ur job is gonna b a permanent one, and have no significant problems associated with moving, then u should move closer to your work place.

Amit.

Not necessary. Last week, my car was almost empty. It started showing the "tank empty" symbol. I was driving on 427 north. So I took Finch exit hoping thatthere would be petrol pump nearby. Since I had to go west, I took Westbound Finch. To my misfortune, it terminated at Steeles. I just kept blindly following the traffic, till I found a Petrol pump at Airport Road and Steeles. But those were quite frustrating 10 minutes I had to spend

TK-> Yeah. THe west bound is pretty desolate. If you had taken the East bound , then you have all facilities at HWY27 and Finch.
Maybe you just needed to know this route. but the route you took was an exception.
and generally, the exit sign should show facilities nearby. if it doesnot , it means that there are none nearby. In this case , use your discretion.
