Since I'm being paid to CD surf today..I might as well ask this questions from the property owners in TO and BC since they have probably dealt with the issue

I saw a raccoon crawl under my porch on Sunday. Hopefully its not breeding and its a temp nest. Since the last cpl of days I have been trying to make its stay unpleasent by leaving a 500 watt halogen light shining up its wazoo, under the porch, through out the night. The next step is to put some ammonia soaked rags into the enclosure...wait a cpl hrs and then seal it. All these steps are the courtesy of google.

Any other ideas from those who may have faced the problem(apparently very prevalent in TO).

Jake,

If you are planning to use ammonia make sure that you take adequate safety precautions. 25% ammonia solution is highly alkaline so keep it away from kids; it can cause a burning sensation in the eyes if it comes in contact with the eyes (splashes). Also use hand gloves if you are planning to use it.

Thanks Nikhil, I've used it before(a skunk the last time) but I need to handle more of it this time...so I can soak in rags VS sprinkle. I was considering hand gloves as an option. Not after your post though...I'll make those mandatory.

You're right the vapours themselves are unbearable. Hopefully the bright light for the past 2 days made the critters move away. I'm afraid of causing the babies(if any), permanent damage that can occur due to the ammonia. The mobile ones will get out of the way so it will not be a problem for them.

Jake,

Please refer to this link

http://ptcl.chem.ox.ac.uk/MSDS/AM/ammonium_hydroxide.html

MSDS is the material safety data sheet. This is for your info only.

Thanks,

Nikhil

Crapolla! its more dangerous than I thought. I either kill myself via a rabid raccooon or blind myself with ammonia.

Choices, choices :p

Hey Jake,

I've not faced the problem of raccoons (right now I am dealing with my own probs with a family of mice under my deck) but I did hear that you can get sprays or powders that are infused with the scent of cayotes, a natural and most feared predator of the raccoon. When applied to the area, the raccoons natural flight instinct kicks in and off he runs, tail between his legs, so to speak.

Another one was to install one of those devices that emit an unltrasonic sound that the little critters find unbearable.

However, I was also heard that none of the above (inc. your methods) work and the only way to safely remove the beast(s) is to hire a professional to trap and remove it physically.

I'm not sure if I helped at all!! :(

You think? :p . I just want to seal the place. I think thats the best way to keep them out.

Thanks for the info tho. It may come in handy...one would think I live in a zoo.

I'm going home early today! Yipee!! Raccoons...on garde!
