HoW Do CD Parents Spend their Day
With lot of CDs talking about their parents ( Mom or Dad) coming to jin them in Canada , I am forced to ask hoe do our Moms & Dads spend their day in Canada , if the chilldren are in school , the husband & Wife working , what will my Dad do back at home.
In india though he is retired( Mom Passed Away) , their is a social circle , books, magazines plus all the freinds he has.............how do our elders adjust in this new place , we would love to be with them but that will on be late in the evening.......any experience please
both of my parents work too, and i'm usually in the univ. all day..so my grandma is pretty much all by herself during the day ..
My dad comes home during his lunchtime sometimes but other than that, she's alone until my parents get home around 5pm .. I'm not sure how she spends her time, I've seen her doing a lot of knitting so maybe that's what she does during the day too ..

When my grandmother used to live with us (she now lives in a centre for the elderly - it's specifically for minorities so she has a lot of indian friends there) she would help with the cooking and cleaning, whatever she could manage. There were no young children to babysit.
Other than that, she seemed pretty bored most of the time and would lament on how sad her life had become....she would think about the children she had lost, her husband, how nobody cared for her in the UK as they did in Africa, how no one respected her anymore, that no one was there for her....all this even though I watched my parents (both with full time jobs) bend over backwards to make sure she was happy.
It's all very well wanting your parents with you....be careful they don't end up resenting you for bringing them to the country you live in. It could be a mistake in the long run. Not saying that all parents/garndparents are like that, but this is just my personal experience.
I have a really bad migraine today so forgive me if my posts are a bit negative.

When my father was here, he used to walk to the library that is 3 kms away. It was taking his 4-5 hours of time atleast. Also in Scarborough where most of the desis live, all the elderly people were meeting in the park or in the open areas.
There is also a temple close by. I have seen elderly people running a video club and watching religious serials regularly.
I have also seen some elders volunteering in School - that is more worth than a time pass!
There are many things can be done - however there might be some adults who does not want to change (or accept the things as it is) and may complain the life here.

One more thing - could be important for many of us.
In India we live a relaxed life. As most of the household have somebody at home all the times, elders develope some habits. Like having Tea at 3.00 PM after a nap. Like having a meal at 6.00 PM.
My father was sharing stories of other elders and this was the common complain. (My wife was not working so we didn't had that issue)
So it is your responsibility to set the expectations right before your dad comes here.

my mom used to read lots of hindi / gujarati books from public library. we used to bring videos from library abt
(example, they would show las vegas / niagara / etc., each video showed a one city and even if u dont know english, u can understand that by wathcing)
movies
basic learning computer
Besides she would read hindi / guj newspapers on computer.
ofcourse cooking cleaning dishes.
n walks in evenings during summer.
bit of socializing n temple on weekend.
My mother was here on Jan 1st, because both of us were doing full time jobs the whole day she used to be alone for the whole day & weather wasn't very nice then, though not lots of snow it was pretty cold.
She mostly watched TV for the whole day, luckily we have dish antenna, so she wasn't much bored & is very much interested in TV.
But the great thing was, we had informed her about the bus that goes to Town centre, so in a week about 2-3 times she used to go there & spend the whole day there & in the evening we used to pick her up. But she could hardly stay for 3 months here, at the end of March she was more than happy to go back to India, also she told us that she will not come back here again, not just for the life here but also the long flight etc.
