Speech by Thomas Friedman of The New York Times....

"When we were young kids growing up in America, we were told to eat our
vegetables at dinner and not leave them. Mothers said, 'think of the
starving children in India and finish the dinner.' And now I tell my
children: 'Finish your maths homework. Think of the children in India
who would make you starve, if you don't.'"

Sankaracharya,
A couple from our office (Indian), came from Vic. park to our office in Vaughan in Taxi paying $62. They will pay $62 to go back, in case the TTC does not operate. Their combined salary (after taxes) will not exceed $120 a day. They could have taken the day off and if needed compensated on Saturday. Our boss has indicated that he will not pay any taxi fares. Besides this couple also work long hours monday-friday. i was a bit upset on hearing their story. They wake up daily at 5:30 am (Typo corrected- thanks Nikhil) to reach the office at 9:00 am. They reach home between 8:00 pm to 10pm daily.
TK
Sidenote : I plan to drop them midway on my way from the office if the TTC does not run.
1. removed the word "Stupid" (b'cos it is also stupid of me to work in this office 7 days a week and 10-14 hrs. daily without proper compensation.
2. they donot have license.

Yes, but considering the fact that this a wildcat strike, we didn't find out about the strike until this morning. Last nite until around 12.30am the Govt. was confident that the stike will not materialize.

a typo it should read 5:30 am instead of 5:30 pm unless they are sleeping in the office. :p

I am lucky because I am not living in Toronto and my office is only 10 mins from home.

But then did you have "Doorsopen" in which you see get to see many famous buildings interior (like city hall, legislative building, TD tower-by mies van der rohe etc...) free of charge for 2 days?
Toronto also has many free activites in the summer (on thewaterfront) like the Jazz festival etc...
I guess it is lucky to be in Toronto for some reasons and for some people.

10 min by walking or driving?

Anyway, not having to spend more than half hour in commute can be a boon to many Canadians, especially during winter months
