yes, if you DO NOT have a phone, eg. cell phone with a canadian number, then there are some disadvantages in getting a VOIP service with a US number like clinton mentioned, some canadian toll free numbers won't accept calls from non-canadian numbers.
also your friends in Canada will have to dial a US number. In my case I have a cell phone with free incoming as well, so it works out for me.

hi,
I am using Primus Unlimited North America plan since last 20 months. I used rogers hi speed and 3web (6 mbps) plan with this Phone plan. No problem once Voip box went down. Primus sent me another box and asked to send back old one. Since then no problem with voice or quality.

VOIP requires corract setup and good internet speed. I always put VOIP box before router and after cable modem.(Cable Modem -> VOIP Box -> Router / PC)

If used VOIP box after router (Cable Modem -> Router -> VOIP BOX / PC) voice quality will be bad.

Can not comment of Vonage, never used.

regards
Zaffar

I was a VONAGE subscriber for sometime. Many negative points-unable to reach 800-type toll free nos. , poor voice quality, no email address on their website; to send them feedback.

On a positive note: Vonage allows you to track incoming/outgoing calls/ billing etc. online.

In my opinion, VONAGE should NOT be your primary phone.

I cancelled their services within 1-2 months of usage.

I have been using PRIMUS for the last 20 odd months and I am generally satisfied with the quality of service. If you have high speed ( I have Bell Sypatico ULTRA DSL with 5 meg) and it is working fine for me.

I love the features of seeing call details on line, find me feature, music on hold, and forwarding of voice mail in .wav file on to my email so that I can listen voicemail any where.

In the last 20 odd months, the gateway has gone bad 2 times and they change it without much fuss.

Overall their pricing is better than VONAGE and customer service is not bad.

Have been using Primus for the last 1 year.. Great service. .Went down only once..
using Rogers High speed ( extreme)

Go for it .. Competitive rates/ great value.

Never had any problems with cell caller/ land line callers / or international lines.

connected the cable modem directly to voip and then to wireless router.

Cheers..

Hi

Thanx for the feedbacks.
Since VOIP connection is primarily based on power and internet connection, how does that adversely affect the service in case of a power outage? What I mean to say is that I haven’t experienced any power outages in Canada so far, or do you mean power outages in the VOIP/Internet service providers server location/office......I am bit confused, so can someone kindly elaborate from the perspective of "power outage".

Hi

I am shopping around for a VOIP service provider, and would appreciate feedbacks about Vonage, its service, billing issues (if any), etc.
Are there any other VOIP service provider like/or better than Vonage?

Also, for hi-speed internet & cable TV, which service provider would be the best bet?

Thanx

You can set it to either ring on your other land line or cell phone or simply let it go to your voice mail in the case of power or internet failure.
