I have Permanent Residency (Landed) since November 1997 but I had to leave and came to Canada periodically till June 2002. Since June 2002 I am living here permanently till date. I had applied for citizenship in July 2005 after making sure that I had completed 3 years residency requirement.

CIC has sent me Residency Questionnaire and part of Questionnaire required to disclose my Absences from Canada since my arrival and all copies of my passport expired and valid.

What will happen if I disclose my long absence from 1997 to 2001 would that jeopardize my residency and my citizenship application although my wife and I have stable employment since last four years in Canada and own a house?

Please help..... I have limited time to submit my papers to them.

Thank you for your advice.

I am not sure what will happen but even if the immigration officer let you in June 2002 even though you violated the immigration rules by either not staying the required number of days in Canada and if you didn't take a RRP (Returning Resident Permit) in that period - then, you are taking a risk.

But I would be surprised if they deny your citizenship as you have demonstrated your willingness to live and contribute in this country by staying and working the required number of days to qualify for the citizenship as this would result in extreme hardship to you and your family.

Please note this is not a professional advise and just represents my personal opinion. You can probably ask the moderator to change this thread into 'Ask Immigration Expert' category where you can get professional advise.

Good Luck!!

There is a section in the application form where all absences with the TO and FROM date along with the country travelled to must be mentioned.

Are you saying that you did not mention your absences ?

During the period you mentioned 1997-2001 , maximum time permitted utside canada was 6 months . So if any absence is greater than 6 months you lose your PR status.

since you are back in canada , your PR status if fine.

The only problem I see is during the period 1997-2001 , if you were outside canada for more than 6 months but did not declare the actual duration during your re entryto canada , then you might have to answer many questions.
