Agreed. However there is this notion that one should at the beginning just go on a diet and when the weight loss is discernible to then go an a toning regime.
At the outset if one starts to tone up, muscle weighing more than fat might cancel the weight loss thus giving rise to the psychological aspect that one is not losing wieght and kill the incentive to continue further with the diet and exercise. In my case I did not use weights nor exerise for the 1st 2 weeks and when I saw that I had lost 5 lbs, I picked up exercising and in the next 3 weeks have only lost 3 lbs- but that's still incentive to carry on for another couple of weeks and then break off for the Xmas New year week and go on a binge.

Hey,
Sorry for being absent for so long, but my computer conked off and had to do without one for almost 10 days.

Anyways, my take on diet and excerise is balance and moderation. If one is planning to lose weight, he/she should find the problem areas in their diet and try to eliminate them. I know this would not give instant result but this would be a lifestyle change in which you would lose weight slowly but permanently. Of course this has to be coupled with exercise which should again become a lifestyle change. Also you should be changing the type of exercises that you do every couple of months otherwise your body just plateaus off and you really do not get the complete benefits of the exercise that you are doing.

I know I come from the old school of thoughts (though I am quite young), but I really try to follow the ayurvedic principles, because I think that at that time the research that was done was really for the betterment of people and not to earn a quick buck. And also the research was done exetensively and primarily on humans not on mice. Well I could go on an on on this, but the only thing that I wanted to emphasize was that the key for everyones well-being lies in living a life of balance and moderation.

Like I said before. Whatever works and keeps one physically active...and focussed on longterm goals.

I personally do not equate weight loss with fitness. However, I can probably afford to think like that since I have been working out under instructions(trainers) for a long time and been an exercise fanatic for longer.

Like I've said before muscle burns fat faster. So putting on muscle may add to your weight but it will also burn off fat. Apart from making you stronger inorder to keep burning of fat efficiently.

Best time to burn fat with cardio...mornings on an empty stomach. The body is starved the whole night and ready to burn fat(instead of carbohydrates...your bodys favourite energy source). When carbs are in short supply the body attacks the next best source...body fat.

If you exercise AFTER a meal, you will still burn fat...but only after the carbs you ate are depleted.

Also your energy levels are higher in the mornings due to the nights rest.

The next best...weights and then cardio. Weight training depletes the carb store fast so your cardio can be well spent burning body fat.

Of course, If losing weight is your only goal, you can do it on a mc donalds diet as well. Just make sure the cals you put in are less than the cals you expend. Like this lady did

Just thought I'd revive this even though I am slacking off and bingeing to the extreme. It will be back to a strict regime after the epiphany.

Here's something I heard at a New Year's party.

'People worry about what and how much they eat from Xmas to New Year when they should think about what they eat between New Year and Xmas.'

I Like that quote!

I've tried to lose weight for over a year now and it's been tough. My weight for the last year has fluctuated. I lost about 10 lbs over the summer, but then vacations and Christmas in between then and now have put a few back on me. Plus I lost my motivation for going to the gym...BUT I started again just yesterday and I'm going tonight as well. I'm going back to watching what i eat and this is how that breaks down (roughly)

Breakfast - Coffee with milk and a half teaspoon of sugar and a slice of toast with some kind of a spread.

Midday snack - banana or yoghurt

Lunch - Carrot sticks, boiled egg (2), fruit, or anything else from leftover dinner that doesn't have any carbs.

After work snack - tea with milk, sugar and 1 biscuit or cookie of some kind (hey, I need a treat!)

Dinner varies with my mood - we had pasta al fredo with chicken last night, but the pasta was whole wheat and the sauce made from milk. If I'm having indian food, I'll limit myself to 1 roti. I hardly make rice, unless it's like biryani or something.

For dessert - well yesterday I bought this Danone Silhouette Mousse which is 60 calories in a 95g cup which I had for dessert - or I have a small peice of chocolate (like whole nut or dairy milk)

I've also made a resolution to do sit ups everyday, drink at least 1 cup of green tea a day, change my salt from regular to unrefined sea salt (which i haven't bought yet because I can't seem to find it at the grocery store) and to run whenever I take my dog out for his walk - he gets his exercise too that way :D

Hey PP,
Congrats on hitting the gym again.

I just want to take this opportunity to suggest(to anyone interested) inculcating more exercises that work out ones whole body rather than localised exercises. You may get results faster by doing exercises that work out your whole body rather than specific parts.

e.g: Try stepups instead of crunches/sit-ups. Push-ups/chin-ups instead of bicep curls. Lunges or squats over calf extentions etc. All these can be done at home too.

The body burns fat faster while exercising within 60-65% of your Maximum heart rate(approx value of your MHR=220 - Age).
http://exercise.about.com/cs/cardioworkouts/l/aa022601a.htm

Whole body exercises(that requires one to use both strength and balance) are more likely to take/keep you in that zone than localised exercises.

Ideally one would inculcate both total body workouts and localised exercises into their regimen.
However for faster results @ burning fat/losing weight...I would suggest totalbody exercises.

If you can use weights(e.g: stepups holding dumbells)...its even more effective.

The more or bigger muscles you work out...the higher your heart rate goes. E.g: if you do squats...you are working out one of the largest muscles(thigh). Your heart has to work faster to keep up with the demands of this exercise. I notice that my heart rate while doing squats(with weights) is significantly higher than when I complete running a mile in under 10 minutes.... I usually do my cardio in the 85-90% zone(not recommended if you are starting out).

Ofcourse the amount of weight one uses makes a difference but even if you do squats without weights you will notice your heart beating faster.

For those who are new to exercises

squats=http://exercise.about.com/od/exerciseworkouts/ss/bestbuttexercis_5.htm

What a great topic. Our community needs something such as this, especially the women out there who have just given to everyone else yet doing nothing for themselves..

I recently, if 9 months is recent had a baby. I was 123lbs to begin with, until the time I gave birth I had gained 40 lbs. I became depressed after giving birth because when I would look at myself I hated what I saw. Then my best friend helped me. What she told me was amazing that if I keep this weight on it will stay with me for the rest of my life. I freaked out! and that was what made me change my eating habits..

What I did to lose it was...first of all..I didn't bring any fat food home, I didn't eat out..... I made everything home....the most important part of all this weight loss was exercising...I started skipping rope...I started with just 5 mins...gradually skipping for 10 mins....now 15...and so on and so forth. iI also did stomach exercises such cross crunches, 90 degree turn of upper body to tone "love handles" or waiste. I have never lost weight faster with any other machine then skipping rope. It was amazing

Now I am losing my last 8 lbs.....going down to 120lbs...and once I get there I will still diet and exercise because if I keep my weight at 120lbs for atleast 6 months, my body will automatically adopt to 120lbs...then I can eat whatever I like within control. And this is my story. Keep up the good work ladies who are currently on a strict diet....I am saying strict because if you are serious about losing weight then you have to be strict otherwise you will always give in and gain even more. thanks to all for reading this very, very long post
