My indian passport is expiring in Dec 2007. And I am planning to apply for a US visitors visa in March 2007.
So, I was thinking that it might be better to use a new (renewed) Indian passport for the visa stamp.
My question - can I apply for a passport renewal at the consulate in Toronto this month (11 months prior to date of expiry). The website does not have any information on this.
I would really appreciate any help in this regard.
Ash.
Your best bet would be to try calling the indian consulate. I believe you can only renew 6 months before expiry.
When I was in India, I renewed my passport when there was about one year left on it. So I don't think there should be a problem. You could apply in Feb, and get the renewal within a week and then apply for US visa.
Hi,
In US, I renewed my Indian passport 10 months before the expiry.
When I went to Indian consulate in Toronto last week for my kid's passport renewal, I was told that it would take 2 weeks to get the passport by mail. They also keep the PR card and it is also sent by mail along with the passport. I wasn't happy with that.
Waiting for the passport and PR card!!!
Thank you very much for your help.
FYI - I called up the Indian consulate in Toronto and confirmed that I cannot renew my passport until 6 months before expiry.

raajen, could you please tell me if you have received your passport(old and new) and PR card yet? If so how long did it take. My application was received by the consulate on Jan 4th. No sign of any progress yet...
Hi,
I received my old and new passport with PR card exactly after 2 weeks of submission. It is better to call the Indian embassy.
