If I am not wrong, passport renewal will not change passport number - they will simply stamp the existing passport with the new expiry date on one of the visa sheets (or even on the same page by deleting and putting the new date and signing it)

i was going thru the FAQ on the nvars website and they said you can call and change the passoport number (charge is 1.98$/min). This number can also be used to ask other questions i may have.

In the next 2-3 weeks i will get passport renewed and if the number changes i will call them and change it on file. If they refuse no frackin deal, will set up a new appointment, am going to the US just for a visit no big deal..

You are wrong. It does change the passport number and you get the new passport (first hand experience from the Indian High Commission in Ottawa).

I have heard about the information you have posted, but it is very old and outdated.

Hi,

You can renew your passport one year before the expiry. Your passport number and the expiry date will be changed.

You can cancel the appointment and reschedule it at the US consulate. Not much crowd a couple of weeks back. Even the next day appointments were available.

Just curious... can you post back when you get your passport. Sometimes Indian consulate takes up to 6 months (from experience) to renew passport.

When I applied for my new Indian passport (since my old one had expired just then) in 2003 Sept., I got my new Indian passport on the next day ar 3:00 pm.
Maybe now the situations might have changed to a week or so but not more than that.
