I am getting transferred to USA and the salary offered is the same amount i get here but in US $. I would like to know from CD members who have lived in USA about living expenses in USA compared to Canada. I have heard that the purchasing power in USA is better then Canada and that even after paying for Medical insurance etc the standard of living is better then Canada.
Please clarify .

Hi Loser,
Cost depends upon location.
Here are few examples
Rent for one bedroom apartment in cities like San Jose,Los Angeles is around $1300 to $1400 and for 2 bedroom its $1800 to $1900 but if you go to midwest then its lot cheaper.
I think grocery cost is same or its little less in USA.
Medical is not free and you get Insurance from your employer and they pay premium for yourself and you have to shell out money for your family members premium.
Car insurance depends upon driving record and again it varies from cities to cities.
US market is very big and competitive so you get good deals on car purchase, apppliances etc.

If you are going to stay around Philadelphia (out of City limit)
• 2BR Apartment - @ 930 US $/month (that may include Gas and water) – and every year increase @ 20 US $
• Electric bill - @ 32 US $/month in winter and up to 90 US $ in summer
• Car Insurance (Only liability) - @ 204 US$/ SIX month
o and 464 US$/ SIX month – Full cover
• Medical Blue cross blue shield (PPO) @ 840 US $/month (2 Adult + 2 kids) – now it depends how much your employer will cover- If your spouse will work than it will be less.
• Except Chicken hot dog everything is less compare to Canada. (But quality in Indian grocery store is better at Canada)
• Driver’s License @ 25 US $
• Car emission and Safety @ 78 US$/year

I will be in Fort smith, Arkansas and it is on the Oklahoma/Arkansas border about 2 hours from Tulsa and 2 and Half hour from Oklahoma city. This town has 80,000 people and four Walmarts.
From Parths figures the expenses seem less compared to what i am paying in a small city in Northern Alberta.

I took the liberty of changing your Avatar Name !. Noticed that you have changed your signature line. Good stuff, but liked your earlier one. I realize with the change in status your earlier line does not hold any longer.

Speech by Thomas Friedman of The New York Times....
"When we were young kids growing up in America, we were told to eat our
vegetables at dinner and not leave them. Mothers said, 'think of the
starving children in India and finish the dinner.' And now I tell my
children: 'Finish your maths homework. Think of the children in India
who would make you starve, if you don't.'"
