If I were you, I would prefer to stay closer to downtown. Not sure of the specifics, but the 10-20 bucks you save on transit coupled with the priceless convenience and time saved are totally worth it. Travelling with a family in NYC can be tiring, cause there's usually a lot of walking while sightseeing. At the end of the day, if you can avoid a long ride back to the hotel, it is well worth the cost, at least in my opinion. 30-40 bucks isn't a huge difference unless you're staying for a very long time.

As far as food goes, there are lots of options, both desi and non. There's pizzerias literally everywhere so worst case scenario - you can always grab a slice or 2 on the go. Depending on where you're staying, you can do a quick online search on nearby Indian restaurants if you prefer.

Jersey city (journal square area) which is a short train ride from NYC has a 'desi" street with lots of Indian shops and restaurants (kind of like Gerrard).

OK folks , back to some more qs and seeking advice from veterans :)

a. Can some one recommend some reasonably priced hotels / inns ($80 - $150 per night) that they have stayed at in New York .... as well as some city close to NY where one can park and conveniently take public transit ...Some one mentioned Hobnokken or a similar sounding city on the forum ....

b. If NYC is chosen to stay , is it convenient to drive and park @ the hotel and then use the transit service ... people have advised against driving in NYC .

c. Which of the following optioins appears to be the most convenient & not overly cost inefective ....

1. Drive - one day each side and then 2 days for NYC ( we have 4 days )
2. Drive to Buffalo and fly to Newark and likewise back ....
3. Take an overnight bus ... spend 4 complete days there and return by overnight bus ...
4. Drive to Kingston & take the ferry .. further drive to NYC .

.

I am going there in August and we are staying there at Hampton Inn in Carlstadt, NJ. They have a NJ transit bus stop right across the street. Paying $116+taxes for 4 adults and a child in a single room.

Just 2 days in NY is cutting it very close - of course you will have to return. If you have small kids, just the central park is a full 1 day visit.

Coming to your questions :
a: We got Holiday Inn in Manhattan for $125.00/night for 2 nights in July 2009. Of course, I bid through hotwire and took my risks - but you can research it well before booking.
b: We parked at the hotel $24/day no in-out privileges. But we were on a 7 day NY/NJ visit, so had no options. You can find cheaper parking online - but distance from hotel/safety of the vehicle are a big concern in NY. For local travel within NY, we use the public transit, it is best option.
c: If you are comfortable with overnight bus journey, that might be a good idea, but keep 1 day spare when you return to get rid of all the physical stress - there is lot of walking/standing in NY.

Good luck with you visit. If you intend to visit the Statue of Liberty, note that lift tickets to the very top are sold months in advance - you need to pre-book your visit.

Thanks TK , NV and as always Hiren ,

We have decided to stay either @ Hobokken or close to Newark Airport .... How long does it take to get to NY from Newark Airport area and is the bus service available till say 10 pm ?

Hobokken as I have learnt is near the 24 hrs Path station/s ...

Thanks for the tip Hiren - which attractioins can be and are recommended to be booked in advance to avoid long line ups ?

We have decided to drive as well ...

The other attraction that has a long line up is the Empire State Building. You can buy their tickets online to avoid line up for the ticket, but you still need to line up for the elevator (unless you buy the express pass $47 kids or adults). A good option is the NY city pass which you can buy at Costco for $80.00 (adults) online and includes 89th floor observatory of the ESB + ferry to the Statue of liberty + a few important museums if you are interested to visit. When visiting with Kids the attractions are different than when visiting with Adults - so please select your destinations accordingly. From my visit, I felt that visit to the ESB was a waste of time due to kids (not interesting for them) - the Central park was paisa vasool. The statue of Liberty is recommended just for the ferry ride and for the kids to associate with the landmark seen in most movies about NY. We took the ferry from NJ which had shorter line ups and also free parking.

Hope you have a great time there.

Hiren
