My car had an engine failure today. I took it to a garage and got n estimate of approc CAD 2000 to replace it with a used engine (labour charges approx 750).

Is this a good estimate?

Another question to people with experience. Is it better to put in a old engine from wreckage car or get the current engine repaired and refurbished.

I know a mechanic who willl give you a warranty on rebuiding your original engine ..So b4 you buy from wreckage check the warranty /guarantee options offered from your mechanic ..The prices varies anywhere from 1500 - 2000 ..

I got a quote of CAD 2500 for rebuilidng the engine, with warranty of 2 years or 30000 kms. The garage name is Ontario engine on Wilson Avenue.

For replacing with old-reused engine, the cost will be between 1800 and 2000 with 3 mpnths warranty.

Can you give me the contact details of the mechanic, who rebuilds. I can take another estimate from him as well.

You had an engine failiure. Did the engine blow a gasket or threw a piston out of the bottom, or did you have a timing chain failiure or what??? What did the mechanic diagnose the problem as.. or the failiure as..?

It is too early to put a price on it, till it is completed. But they all will give you a ball park figure and pile the rest up with as additional expenses.

You have the owners manual to tell you all about the make model etc., Now please get a Chilton's total car care, if that is what they call it now, for about 25bucks plus tax. That will tell you a lot more about the vehicle you own. Make sure it is for the make and model and the year that you have.

I will provide you with a few names and addresses and you please find the phone numbrs and keep it on file, to call and find out what it costs and entails at each shop. In fact you can google them too.

They stopped making these in 2005 and hence you will not get a newer Engine. So, your using an older engine is not a good solution.
It will be advisable to rebuild one, but it will cost 1-1/2 times the Used one. With a used one you have only a thirty day warranty/guarantee. But with a rebuilt one they will throw in a 60,000 kms or three year one too.
Make sure that they will use all new parts, get it from them in writing as an estimate. Nothing oral.

Get two good oil changes in quick succession after the repairs. Say third and the fifteenth day. that should keep you in good stead. Ask the rebuilder to throw in these two.

Could not call anyone to provide you with dollar figures, sorry about that.

Meanwhile I thought I should update with what exactly is happening.

I contacted a couple more Engine remanufacturer/rebuilder and found the price very expensive (CAD 2700 plus tax, CAd 4000). The garage where I am doing it is agreed for 2500 (tax included). He will give formal invoice, with warranty for 30000 kms or 2 years.

Meanwhile, I called GM Customer service and found that my vehicle was covered for power tain warranty upto 100,000 Kms. Unfortunately, the dealership did not give me this right information at the right time. Hence, I was now lodged complain with GM.

Also, I foudn that when I bought the vehicle, I tiik extended warranty for 7 months for pwer train, which was not really required. The sales guy there had no knowledge about the 100 K warranty. I paid CAD 175 for extra warranty. So, people buying used car can learn from this to call the right guy to get the warranty information before buying extended warranty on used vehicle purchase.
