My post landing experience of Canada
By:

Friends,
This is my first message on my post landing experience in Toronto last month. The last 4 weeks have been full of surprises and I’d like to share some of my 2 cents from a different perspective.

The first big surprise was at the first immigration counter when the immigration officer said to me “Welcome to Canada, your new home..eh”. I cannot describe the feeling, every country that I have been to in the past I was asked at the immigration “When do you plan to leave?” The next immigration officer turned out to be a lady of indian origin, she took my picture for PR and did not even bother to check my landing funds, even when I insisted on showing ( I spent $10 in getting the drafts made and no one even looked at it )Then I was given a welcome package with vital info for new immigrants. This booklet holds info on the wealth of resources in local areas in Canada. Every resource listed in this booklet should be explored, to my surprise I found many new immigrants giving up too soon on the resources mentioned. The whole process from stepping out of aircraft to clearing customs took not more than 40 minutes.
Outside the airport I was greeted by one of the coldest days of the season with -31C and winds. I was happy I landed on the coldest day because every other days seemed like spring even it was -5 outside.

The next day after applying for my SIN card I attended a seminar in a nearby new comer information center (NIC). There were about 20-25 other new immigrants at this seminar and it gave a wealth of info for a new comer ranging from local info on GTA to how to prepare and look for jobs. These NIC’s also have one on one counselors to help every new comer target the jobs in his own field. Like NICs, there are many such centers and organizations all across canada and what surprised me that how much the Govt is doing to help the new immigrants settle in and get into the mainstream. In the 4 other countries where I have lived and worked before no such help was available, I had to struggle and find out things by myself.
We formed a group of 8-10 new immigrants when we met at NIC and it proved to be a great support structure, to be able to share your experiences and views with people in similar situations is a great help in itself. I took every opportunity to talk to every desi or immigrant I came across at bus stops at trains etc, getting different perspectives was a great learning experience in itself.

I’d like to differ with those who present a very negative image and say that only labor jobs are given to desis. I found a few major trends in immigrants which I feel is also contributing to the miseries of new immigrants. I may be wrong but the general trends which I was was quite disturbing
1. Many desis try to land a job as soon as possible within the first 2 weeks. $1=Rs30 factor and also the fear of spending from the settlement funds drives this trend but I’d suggest if one has to do labor jobs, do it after 3-4 months when one has tried every other avenue to get a break in their own field. Also many come with families and kids which will make things even worse in the beginning. Unless one is very well funded bringing families should be a big NO NO.
2. Many desis try to in the comfort zone of GTA. GTA is an industrial area Esp mississauga and west and most employment agencies there will give only labor and factory jobs, even if you hold an MBBS. I met very well qualified people doing labor jobs and were feeling happy that they are earning more than what they did in india. I was stupefied by one guy(B.E, MBA) who said he is doing day and night shifts at a factory just to accumulate 900 hours so that he can get unemployment insurance from the govt.
I don’t blame the govt. of canada for his miseries, if that is what his goals are then that is what he will get. Many of us don’t aim high enough.
We all have to struggle. the choice of where to struggle is ours. Whether to struggle really hard to re-qualify( if needed) and get into our own field or to keep struggling in menial jobs. The choice is really ours.

3. Not many desis make use of the Co-op and other employment programs offered by the govt. The down side of these programs is that one does not get paid for 5-6 months while one gets to work in firms in ones own field. 85% of those who participate in these programs get gainfully employed. Also, not many desis join french courses. I am not sure of the details, but I am told Govt of Quebec gives $500 a month to everyone who enrolls for a french learning class. A family of 4 grown ups could make $2000 a month for just attending french classes everyday for 4 hrs a day!! And one could then do other jobs as well to support. What do we gain by learning french? A whole new world of govt jobs will open to us besides the money and knowledge of another language. Think about it. It will take time but all good things take time.

4. Lastly and most importantly all new desis must work on communication and presentation before coming. That is the key for everything in Canada. I met a senior college prof from India with a PhD, he was complaining about lack of jobs. There are indians in senior positions in Canadian universities with less qualifications than him but what was the difference. The difference I felt was that this person despite his qualification could not even pronounce his name right “Sassi Kumar” for Shashi Kumar in a bihari/UP accent. No offence to Bihari’s please, I am a bihari too. To top it off he had strong sented “chameli ka tel” and drooping 70’s moustache … I wonder how could he clear any interview.

There are plenty of opportunities in Canada. To get to those we have to work hard to get local licencures and qualifications and canadianize ourselves with a positive outlook. And jobs and opportunities will follow in with time. Otherwise we will just working hard on menial jobs with no hopes for future.
There are very few places in the world which offer so many opportunities to new immigrants to settle down, we need find out about them to make full use of it to succeed.

Gook luck to all.

I had a fall while skiing once and twisted my leg pretty bad. The knee area was swollen up like a balloon and I decided to go to emergency (for the first time in Canada). I was waiting for about an hour and getting ticked because of the delay when I saw two cops rush in with a young kid who seemd to have a gunshot wound to the head. Needless to say, he was admitted right away and I understood the reason for the delay. Took about 4 hours before I was x-rayed but I was ok with that.

Yes, the system does need tweaking and its not perfect, but I don't think its that bad either. Its actually pretty good considering its free (I know, I know we pay for it in taxes, but the biggest relief is to know that its still available to you when you get laid off and don't pay taxes)

just few pieces of fact.

# 1. a man in his late 30's working for reliance driving a indiaca given by a company in mumbai living a upper middle class lifestyle came here literally struggled here for 3 years working jobs at tim hortens and recently he got hired by a bank as a trianee . now he is in his early 40's earning $ 12 an hour .

he will be 45 by the time he reaches a decent position giving him the lifestyle he was living already living in india.

# 2. a business man from india earning 25-30 k a month leading a babu wala life style in india came here now he and his wife both are working making just enough to lead a decent lifestyle. But that respect he commanded in India is not here.He and his wife both have to work here still managing lifestyle almost same as what they had in india .

what did they gain my moving here ?
thier ans is nothing and they cant move back now as their kids dont want to move back and now it will be even more difficult for them to move back as they dont have capital to start business.

# 3. a man from pakistan moved when he was 26 and had his share of labour jobs before getting a JOB in CCRA .made good money .his contract expired with CCRA and then he started his coveinience store continued to make good money .
i asked him his opinion on canada ?

ANS - he still feels he was better off in his country because of his the respect he commanded and the so called real happiness being their in his own country.
reason being " aap yahan ke hoon nahin sakte and wahan ke reeh nahin jaate "

# 4.I know people staying here for 30 years and still thinking of retiring in India.

why going back when u have stayed more in Canada then in India .
My mind is still thinking.

# 5. A man had 3 stores in India and is here working and looking for a job and struggling since last 3 years.
wasn't he better off in India.

# 6. I came here and am a student myself.I am looking for a UNPAID internship .and am not able to find one since last 3 months.

# 7. I have a guy from Syria in my class and is in Canada since last 6 years he is still in school because he tried job earlier with his qualification as an engineer from syria but could not find one so he also thought that getting education here would help .he tried it and he like me is also looking for a unpaid placement which he has failed to find.

#8 I know a guy ( white guy ) born bought up in canada studied in sheridan college ( the best in the world for animation ) and graduated 1 year earlier and is still looking for a job and working at Tim Horten's .

There are many more examples that i can give but then it would be too long a post .
I have just landed in Canada in September and i still feel i am yet to feel canada first hand as i am busy with my college.

After reading experiences of people at canadaiandesi.com and then meeting people from all walks of life everyday i cannot help but get a negative impression of canada .correct me if i am wrong .

Now this things have taken its toll to an extent that i am feeling like i will try for few more months and am more worried about getting a Job then getting my Visas extended(which was my prime concern when i had landed)

Imagine a person of Chandresh's calibre(i personally have high regards for him) doing labour jobs and have to struggle in life just becaused he moved to another country.I feel a sucessful person will always be sucessful no matter what he does if u can do it once you can do it twice as well. But if this happens to a person like him then there is something really serious a problem in the system .

I have two questions

1) Why are all these people still here?

Sorry, I don't buy the "Kids don't want to go back" reason, that just sounds like a convenient excuse. Are they trying to say that their kids are turning a blind eye to their struggles and just saying "I don't care you're packing shampoo bottles, I have a great life here so I don't want to go back"? Do you seriously think parents will put up with that kind of stuff? If a kid has started acting like that in Canada, it may be the foremost reason to go back.

I know my parents would not put up with that kind of stuff, no matter how much they love me. First of all, if I was a teenager and if I saw my upper-middle-class-in-India parents struggling with labour jobs outside of India, I would tell them myself that we should go back. And if I did not and things were that dire, my parents would probably put their foot down and make everyone go back, parents have to make these decisions sometimes for the greater good of the family.

So I find that a rather feeble reason.

I just came back from India and its pretty clear to me why they don't want to go back. I met many "upper-middle-class" Indians there who are dying to come here. I told them how people have to start from scratch and struggle here, their reply was "it does not matter". They're just tired of the endless chaos, the constant corruption, the pollution, the politics etc etc.

I'm not India-bashing here, I love India as much as anybody else on this forum. I had an awesome time there and there are some wonderful things about India that you can never find here. But you can't ignore the problems there, I felt them very clearly in the month that I was there. These are the problems why most people come here in the first place, but they tend to forget about them when they struggle here. They remember them quite clearly if they think about going back though, and that's why hardly anybody goes back.

My second question is
2) Have you ever met anyone who had positive things to say about Canada? Can you list a couple if possible?

Hi Nishit
No One wants to hear the truth here, my friend :D. I consider myself a successful immigrant but you are right there are serious problem with the system here and that is the reason I want to move back to india. Been in this country for six year and away from India since last 16 years but I feel it is not worth. I brought up my 9 yo son in a way that he can easily adjust in India. He know the language and he know indian traditions, the only problem he will face would be standard of education as standard of Indian School education is too high if you compare with Canada. He is in third grade and started learning basic multiplications (2X2 and so on) and divisions, but if I work hard with him in India, he would be able to perform at par in any Indian school.

What I think if you can work 16 hours a day, can sustain this much stress and can give your 8 month salary per anum in taxes for 'SO CALLED" best public services, you can be better off in India.

Thanks and regards.
Biomed

Biomed,

I can see from your previous posts that you have been thinking about moving back for a sometime now. When you do actually move, please post your experiences on the forum. I'm sure a lot of people are eager to hear first hand from someone who's stayed here for so long and is now re-locating. I know I am.

It may also help others who're thinking about moving back but are not sure.

Again, its all a matter of perspective against which no one can argue. If one thinks that he/she is going to be more content with life in India, there's absolutely no reason why he/she should not move back.

Its just that I've met a lot of people who talk about it all the time, but I've never actually met someone who has taken the step. So really looking forward to hearing someone's experiences regarding this....

Nishit,
I thought you already left. You are still here?
I can give you examples of successful people , who I know personally, in Canada. These are all Businessmen, professionals and educators. Highly placed intheir fields. Just a cpl of weeks ago I, at a party, met 5 professors from the John Molson School of Business (Concordia univ). Including the faculty Chair!!! All of them first generation Indian Immigrants. One of them has pictures of himself with Jean Chretien and has personally met Paul Martin too. He is well respected in the Sikh community here, and is a brilliant man(not just academically). He has been in Canada for about the same time as I have been here.
Think about it. These Indians are the people responsible for teaching other Canadians to be successful!!
I am sure there are a lot more successful people than I personally know.

Also about positive thinking- I consider it a way of life. Not a button you switch on and off and say...ok now inorder to get this job or pass this exam I am going to be positive. After that, I am going to switch the button off and find out some more reasons to blame things around me. I dont think it works that way. Many a time, it may be an uphill challenge to be positive...but it is a way of life. You have to consciously choose to do it. It is especially important to do when things around you look bleak. I strongly believe that, you can see the true mark of a person by the way he behaves when he is in adverse conditions.

Anyway, now that you know more than enough people who are rueing the fact that they are in Canada, I have a suggestion for you. Like BL mentioned in other words...Can you seek out 8 successful people who are happy to be here and write about them too? It may help others and I have a feeling it will help you too.

Isin't it interesting that when good things happen to us we thump our chest in pride and say "i did it" and when the good things do not happen we blame the system!!

Lets start taking responsibility for our failures as well just as we do for successes.

The list of failed careers which Nishit lists is just a drop in the ocean in the number of people who are not happy with the system here. But he leaves out is those who made it big.

my own boss was stagnating in a Tata company for 15 years in india, he came here got his P.Eng in 2 yrs ..in 5 yrs he was running his own business after 8 yrs today he runs a 50 person company. This is just one example of many...i'd suggest for those who really want to know ...go to indian chambers of commerce office in Toronto or to the indian embassy and if you know someone there get a list of indians in senior exec levels in Canadian industries. It will make you proud as an indian. There are many indians in Candian civil services and other high govt posts. unfortunately they dont come to this forum but they are very large in number as well.

Why dont people in this site talk about those who have succeded as well? the answer that comes to my mind is simple.
I dont know if this is the case and would like your inputs as well.
This site is a great forum for people to share their experiences and to help new comers. Those immigrants who got hurt( like Chandresh) want to sincerely help others even more, so that others dont get hurt as well.
But what is happenning as a sideaffect is that this forum is also becoming a vehicle for them to vent out their unhappiness. and when others show sympathy, it is comforting for them.
When we suffer, we like to form a likemeinded group of people in similar situations as a support group. That explains the addictions to CD, and maybe that is why I am addicted too. For those who are successful and happy do not see the need to come here, Jake and a few other are exceptions and I am grateful that I get to know their veiws as well. But there are very few successful ones here.

As a result any new comer who visits this site gets overwhelmingly only one side of the story, and thinks that Canada is a hellhole...which is not the case. i felt the same way when I joined this group, despite my first hand positive experiences in the past in canada, for a moment even I was shaken and began doubting my decisions. I am glad sanity prevailed on me and I stayed on course and did not back out.

For those who are thinking of going back....you can make the best decision for yourself . But i'd like to give an anology which my former boss gave to me who made it really big.
If an electric circuit is grounded the lamp will not lightup ....because the current takes the path of least resistence and gets earthed.

Going back to india is like taking the path of least resistance.

But as I said before. I may be wrong and would like to hear from those who went back.

Goodluck to all.
