There was going to be a fall out from the Lebanon crisis and here it is.

While the report is about the gulf, I am sure this will affect everyone holding a maple leaf card outside of Canada. And the GST refund is nothing but a red herring. The issue is that we give out Canadian Immigration visas for people to immigrate to Canada. it is not a "security" blanket, it is not a "go to subsidized university" card, it is not a medical insurance policy. It is an immigration visa. Any other use of this visa (some refer to as excersing options) is an abuse of the system.

Yes, Canada needs immigrants. But let's face it, these folks are not immigrants. If fact, they are hindering those folks around the world that actually want to come to Canada.

Until Canada addresses the issue of immigration (i.e creating good/decent jobs, recognizing foreign skills), this problem is going to be there. Let's face it this way. There is no point in blaming the immigrants.

People are following the rules when they apply for immigration and facing the "punishment" of loss of status if they do not fulfill the requirements. Nobody is causing the hindrance for others. It is a human nature to have the desire for more options - whether you use them or not - and that's what these people are doing.

This has got nothing to do with Lebanon crisis. Surely some people who have their axe to grind will try to connect the two
Lebanon evacuation was primarily Canadian citizens of Arab / Lebanese origin.
While as a majority of people from Abu Dhabi embassy applying for immigration are from the sub-continent.
As far as evacution was concerned, India "air-lifted"111,000 civilians during the first Gulf war from Kuwait. No one payed anything for their evacuation nor did anyone ask the government (Indian) why we spent this money on evacuation.
Even during Lebanese conflict Indians were evacuted by Indian Navy. No questions asked.

This has nothing to do with what India did or not do. The evacuation of from Lebanon was for both Canadian Citizens and PR card holders, period! Their decent has nothing to do with this. An Indian PR holder in Lebanon would have had the same treatment.

And I quote from the article
Quote:

And it reignites the debate over how much time today's highly mobile skilled immigrants should spend in Canada to earn and keep resident status – an issue that flared last summer, when millions were spent to rescue Canadian citizens and permanent residents from Lebanon during the Israeli bombardment.

I hope it’s not for expats who are hired by Canadian companies, paying Canadian taxes, on PR and living out of Canada. Ours is a case like that.

My comaprison was with the fact that a third world country was providing this facility to its citizen and no one said anyhting about it. A total of 11,000 canadians were evacuated from Lebanon. However we have no figure as to how many of these are permanent residents. So to use this stick to say that a lot money was spent on geting people out of Lebanon is not correct.
After all there are a total of 1.7 million Canadian's living and working overseas.
