Your friend is probably not even aware of this "hypocritical" behaviour but anthropologists would probably term it as a disconnect between reason and emotion. We all exhibit varying degrees of this kind of behaviour in our daily lives. I am not defending your friend in any manner. More on the contradictory behaviour of humans is in this link.

The The visitor would almost certainly conclude that humans are very topsy turvy. They are obviously just animals, yet they seem to think that they are special. They cannot decide whether to prefer their minds or their bodies. They cannot decide whether to prefer their senses or their thoughts. They think of themselves as immortal, yet they die. They think of themselves as lords of creation, yet they are a prey to very many other species. They have excellent minds, but this just leads them into folly and unreason. They claim to be the sole judges of truth, but spend much of their time lying. They are loving, yet they spend much time hating and undermining each other.

This is why it is really impossible to say that humans are basically of this or that nature. The species is a mass of contradictions, very malleable, full of potential for good and evil. Often it makes you despair as you study its antics, but occasionally you draw your breath in wonder at the beauty it creates and the truths it has discovered.

You are correct. He is clueless and it isn't that I have given up at the first display of such behavior. No amount of convincing seemed to be enough to make him understand. I have given up thinking it as a failure on my part for not being able to induce some rational thinking.

This is the truth. My Aunt in Detroit heads the local Chinmaya Mission. Sings bhajans everyday and preaches love and tolerance and how to lead life the right way. And then refuses to get a high speed connection at home because they can get wi-fi signals from their neighbor. Just funny in a sad way...
