I am a US citizen born in the US. My mother was born in Canada but married a US citizen before my birth. He is not my father. I was born in 1971. I was curious if I could still get citizenship in Canada because my mother is a citizen.

First and the foremost, You do have a right to the Canadian Citizenship. See Link. How do you go about it and obtain the same will become a simple process after you read through each of the item in this web address. You will have to find all of the details asked for and complete the application. It will become simple if you have all of the supporting documents avaiable to you or have the Originals. They will call for all of them. Of course take a copy before you submit and they will also return the same back to you. The fee is $100.00 the last I knew.
Good Luck to you.
Return back to your Canada. You will then be a Dual citizen. Give your Mom a nice big hug. That is a most precious gift she could have ever given to you.

Freddie.

If your Mother or your Father did register you with the Canadian Government as a child born to a Mother outside of Canada, hoping that she might some time return back and you along with her, then, obtain those papers or the document that she has with her. Then approach a Canadian High Commission and ask them to permit you to obtain the Citizenship on payment of a fee of $100.00. I was under the impression that you have most or all of the papers there with you.

You can also find out if there is a way that she can register your birth now? being so late.

If you do not have such papers, then she may have to return back and then might be in a better position to talk to the Immigration or an expert and ask for alternate solution here.

If every thing else fails, apply to immigrate. You will be ahead of the game. You are only 36 now. They are looking for people like you here.

Good Luck.

Freddie.

I heard that there was a newspaper article here in Canada asking people to stand upto this question, when they were bringing in returning immigrants from war torn countries. Some one might have seen such an article in the local papers. They will be in a better position to respond to seeing any such material. F

Thanks again for the info. As far as I know I was never registered with the Canadian goverment. I wasnt aware that was required. I will look into immigration and hopefully something will work there. I have been trying for 3 years to get to Canada.

Ive been told the Canadian Government is going to change this requirement and I could get citizenship because my mother is a citizen. Is this true? If so does anyone know when this is to happen?
