Just a FYI...

Your child is a Cdn citizen if, per the new citizenship law...

"The limitation affects the way people acquire Canadian citizenship outside Canada. It means that, in general, children born outside Canada on or after April 17, 2009, will only be Canadian at birth if they are born to a Canadian parent who was either born in Canada or became a Canadian citizen by immigrating to Canada as a permanent resident and subsequently being granted citizenship (also called naturalization)."

In other words, if you are naturalized Cdn citizens through PR immigration, you US born child is a Cdn citizen.

Sorry to digress , - What does an infant birth certificate look like ? Does it say 'Statement of Live Birth ' and is stamped & sealed by the Registrar ?

I have not received any Birth Certificate perse , but a document titled as above showing a Regn no. and all relevant details .... Wondering if this is the Birth Certificate ?

Generally on an average how long does it take to receive a birth certificate ?

US or Canadian birth certificate?

If US:
It states, "Certificate of Live Birth" and is signed by the Registrar and the cert has an embossed seal of the city. It has also carries one of the parents' signature.

In our case, we cert was available 10 business days from the hospital discharge date.

I don't how much each city/hospital/state vary in their formats and timelines, but the above is based on Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan.

Yet to find out anything about Cdn certs....if we ever decide on the next one, that is.... :)

FYI..there are 2 types of Birth certificate :

1. Long form with parents names - useful for Indian visas for kids later (like PIO,OCI) etc. This probably what you have. It is actually just a photocopy of the form you filled while registration, but with official seal.

2. Short form - which is credit card/valet sized card, which carries only the information of the child. Was useful in past when Canadian citizens crossed the US border, now it is hardly required.
