I surrendered my Indian Passport when I got Canadian citizenship and went to get Visitor Visa for India first time. I have no plans to get PIO card or dual citizenship.

I once made a mistake, but I was wrong about it.
Last night an interview with the new Indian High Commissioner was aired by Omni2's South Asian News. She had just received an official explanation for suspending the dual citizenship.
During the recent Parvasi Divas, the PM anounced that the dual citizenship would be available to NRI's of almost all the countries. Now this has resulted in a situation where all the 'new' countries have to be contacted, their rules studied and their permissions obtained before a new set of rules can be formulated for the dual citizenship. I guess it requires fresh legislative approvals too.
The whole process may take a good deal of time, may be years (these are my thoughts).

You will have to surrender your passport the first time you go to Indian Consulate to get any Visa after getting Canadian Passport. From emergency travel perspective, I got everything from Canadian citizenship to Canadian passport to Indian Visa within a month.

Do you have to surrender it immediately after getting the citizenship or within a time limit?
Technically, U dont have to surrender ur Indian passport after getting ur canadian citizenship. U could hang onto it as long as u want . No one takes it away!!!
BTW, Did u know that as per the Indian Constitution, Technically, U loose the Indian citizenship only when u take up a foreign passport
Yeah, After acquiring ur Canadian Passport, when u go for ur Indian visa for the first time, u have to submit ur Indian passport as well. Dont know if Surrender is the right word to use here. All they do is cancel ur Indian passport. They either stamp couple of pages as "CANCELLED", or as in the past, they cut triangles in the 3 sides (Effectively Cancelling it ) and they return it back to u.
Now with the dual citizenship stuff, if i understand it correctly, and correct me if i am wrong, u loose ur indian citzenship when u take up canadian citizenship(non techincally ). U then have to register urself as a non resident Indian and reapply for a "non resident" Indian citizenship. Its yet another scam to make some extra $$$'s
