Pramod Chopra & Hiren ,
Thanks a lot for your helpful (as always) responses . I will update the thread as I grow closer to my GPS purchase .

The Street names ones are not really useful infact will not be of use. Just imagine you are coming close to a crossing and the device says Turn right at XYZ street. You will have to reach the junction to make out which street is XYZ or keep looking at the Screen of the unit to see where to go.
Also many places there will be no street names.
GPS systems are supposed to tell you well in-advance where to turn rather make you wait and get confused.
I bought a Street names one and had to reutrn in becuase it became useless and rather a pain.
The ones without street names simply tell you Turn Left or Right and thats all you need when you don't know where you are going.
Hope that helps.
I recently purchased Garmin 760 and let me tell you, its absolutely a useful device. It has so many features, which is making my life more easier and safe, such as TTS, Traffic detours, Point of interests, address book, hands free calling thorough blue tooth, voice dial, accessing phone book of my cell phone through GPS, trip log etc..
Hope this helps,
Regards,
VJ.
We have heard of various GPS systems here and I have found the following ones selling currently at various stores . Please advise which is best amongst these or if there are any current deals in your knowledge ......

Also since some GPS need additional maps are there some popular ones which have some free internet feeds available (with in a reasonable price range of course )

I have a Tom Tom one. I am happy with that. It is an entry level GPS and I am fine with that. I usually have look at Google maps before my trip so I have a fair idea of the roads. And I think the text to speech feature is big distraction as you would be then searching for a particular street and not pay attention to the road. I also usually shut "Kantabai" off and look at the display to figure when to turn. I bought mine at $149.99 and if you are getting it at the same price go for it.
Thanks Iceberg ,
I have never used a GPS and feel that most of the guiding should be done by voice minimizing the time one has to look at the display - unless you have a co occupant.
TTS may not be needed unless there are 2-3 streets in very near distance which is again rare - but that's additional info which may be ignored ........ If one has to turn , how many kms before does the GPS start prompting so that you can change lanes sensibly .
Also amongst the above which are the more popular ones .... Garmin 260 was on sale at Canadian Tire recently - though out of stock they gave me a raincheck . TomTom is available at Staples for 150/- ($20 discount ~ 130) --- same for MOOV which is 150-20=130 and has TTS also .... But I am not sure about the support and popularity it has as one should consider the additional cost one may need to expend in updating the maps ........

1. Usually if you are on a freeway / highway the prompt about 2 miles before and keeps prompting as you approach a turn / exit / change over. But trust me after a few days you will get tired of that constant nagging!
2.Tom Tom has the latest maps and a map share feature so many times your maps are updated when you connect on line. And after a couple of years you will any case want a new one so why spend a crazy amount now but instead keep getting new ones every few years.
