Hi guys
I had become a PR in Mar 2004 when I crossed the border from US. I was here for a month that time after which I drove back to US.
I returned to Toronto in Apr 2007 and am settled here now working in IT. I also plan to buy house this year.
My PR will expire in Mar 2009 (5 yrs) and as I understand I will have to show 2 yr residency. However I don't have any proof/docs/receipts for the 1 month that I had stayed in Mar 2004. There's no stamping in the passport either of my departure from CAN nor my re-entry in US since I had my I-94 (so ideally there's no record of when I had left CAN in 2004).
I am hopefully expecting there shouldn't be any issue during my PR renewal in Mar 2009 but wanted to confirm. Please let me know if there would be an issue.
Second thing was considering the above situation, would it be advisable to not leave CAN now (say if I wanted to visit India) atleast till Mar 2009 when PR gets renewed else I may have a problem re-entering the country?
Appreciate your replies.
Thanks.
Personally, I have not gone through the PR card renewal process so I can't say for sure, but I can't imagine there being an issue. I could be wrong however.
As far as traveling to India and coming back, if you didn't have an issue when you came back after being away for all those years in the US, I doubt you would have any issues flying back from India.(especially given that you now have proof of stay in Canada at present).
thanks YK.. I also saw the post below in this thread and cdn_dude's reply - http://canadiandesi.ca/read.php?TID=19338&page=3

Yes, you can even opt to not renew the PR card at all (and directly apply for citizenship when you become eligible). The PR card is useful ONLY to enter Canada from abroad.

So I guess there shouldn't be a problem for renewal.
As for leaving the country and re-entering I am not sure as other posts in that same thread indicate that depends on officer at POE airport.. don't think it should be an issue but then u never know.
Of course everything depends on the officer at the Point of Entry, but I think most of those posts you are referring to are for people who have been away for more than 3 years and are trying to enter Canada for the first time(after those 3 years). In your case you are already here. Like I said, I think if you had to have any issues, it would have been the time when you came back from the US. But of course there are no guarantees.
That's true.. didn't have any issues when I came from US by road.. thanks for the clarification.
