You could try Salavation army cottages at Jackson's point (North of the 404). The cottages are on the shores of a lake and in a very small village. May not be as good as the Gerogian bay ones.
The 2 bed cottages is around $167 for 3 nights (friday night to Monday morning) and 3 bed ones ate $187 (incl. Taxes). they also have domitory kind of accomodation.
They have a website too . Google the name to find it.
I was there last week and had a good time. The cottages were old but well furnsihed and without any bed bugs. I was able to go to the lakeshore (near the downtown core of the village (Lorne Road end) and see boating (personal only), scuba diving (very rare) and fishing (small ones).
OTOH, If you go to Georgian bay, there are commerical boat rides and the scenery is good and the villages are big, but most likely you may have to pay more for any type of cottages.
Hope this helps
Peace out

Thanks TK for the information. You always try things and give a down-to-earth first hand feedback.

2) A question. I looked at their website. is this salvation army cottages a religious group thing? i mean, does it accomodate people of different faiths.

3) This thread is a great way to pen down all of the cottage experiences we have had. Hope to hear from everyone.

cheers

If you are willing for cottages 10 mins away from the beach front, rates come down from around 350 to 150-200 range.

Also, some of the cottages share bathrooms!! I think it was near Sandbanks, one bathroom was being shared by 3 or 4 cottages! Check these out when you book.

Again, if you are particular abt looks also, you need to ask abt them. Some of the cottages we ended up looked more like townhouses than the traditional cottage image in mind.

The cottages are run by a religious institution but all the people who come there are from different faiths. You may or may not run into a group which has come on a religious tour. They accomodate people from all faiths. There is a board in the cottaged which say that Alchoholic beverages are not to be consumed in the premises of the Salavation army property + you are not allowed to sleep more than 6 people in a two bed cottage.
The price is really low as you can see from the website. There is no fine prints at all. Cottages are real cottages and old but not filthy. All cottages has it own washrooms to be used by you only. They do provide toilet paper and bathing soap. You pay if you break anything or leave the cottage dirty while leaving.
Each cottage is equipped with plates, cups, micro wave, mini fridge cooking range, bed spreads, pillows etc..
The site abuts a lake. You may need 1 min. to 3 mins walk to the lake shore (depending on the cottage). Cottages donot directly have views to the lake. The dorms (lakeside) have views to the lake. I swam in the lake but not sure of the water quality. I even by mistake swalloed some lake water during my bath in the lake but still I am fine.
I have to tell you that the views / options offered by georgian bay can in no way be compared to this (Salvation army @ Jackson's point) but this is the only place that desi's knew that offered cottages for such a low price.
Hope this helps.
Peace out
