Any good places / things in particular one should see in New York?
Ny is like a world by itself. Just visited it last Christmas. Compared to Europe prices, NY prices are atleast 70% cheaper.
Things to see :
Empire state building (with the movie about the city-Animated)
Penn Station
Statue of Liberty
Ferry rides
JFK Airport
Manhatten and various attractions within it.
I suggest you google NY city and get a list of attarction and visit the ones that you are interested.
Peace

I would strongly suggest not to skip "Times Square" in NY..

Thanks everyone. Looks like there is quite a bit to see. Also shopping should be good especially when it is cheaper than Canada.
If any of our Desis stayed in Newyork in any moderately priced accommodation, please list here so that it would be helpful to others.
Thanks,
Where are the best places to shop?
I was in New York last month, though for a short time.
Here is what I did
Statue of Liberty - bought the tickets on line with the monument pass. The queue is shorter for online tickets. Over half a day spend in that. Evening walk around Battery park, Wall street. Went to Grand Central (to remind my son of Madagascar) and walked towards the UN building. Went to relative overnight and they took us for a late night car ride around downtown.
Went to the Central park (generally moved around and also saw a castle -forget the name). Went to Penn station and then to Times Square. Shopped at Toys R us on the square. By then it was raining and went back to Long Island on the Long Island Rail Road ( LIRR is cheaper then GO). The best way to see New York is to walk. We did not have the time but you can also consider the Hop on Hop off to move around.
Though I have heard many things about New York I found people to be a LOT LOT friendlier over there compared to the stiff lips here.
Hope this helps.
